HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!  Dowling Celts and Pagans would probably have celebrated the festival of Samhain which marks halfway between the autumn equinox and winter solstice. That is the technical end of autumn with its great bounty from the harvest and the beginning of winter. Starting at sunset on 30 October to sunset on 1 November, today is is acknowledged or co-opted by several faiths to remember our ancestors and family, and to express out gratitude for all the good things in our lives.  It also makes much sense as the Celtic New Year as we end on a high and plan for the next year.

O'Dowling's Country

Fearann ua n-Dunlaing shown in north Laois, Ireland. Similar to most old maps, 'North' is to the right.

The original territory of the family was at Fearann ua n-Dunlaing (O'Dowling's Country). This area covered along Western bank of the River Barrow. The O'Dowling's were one of the Seven Septs of Leix, significant families in the County once called Queen's County.

Timeline Events

Timeline events are significant historical occurences that can be listed with our ancestor's details to reflect circumstances that they lived with and which may have affected their lives.

2020 will be a genealogically historic year. Many of us will lose members of our families during the current epidemic, and so many that this year will feature for family historians as a 'timeline' event.
