What little we know of our John Joseph Duigan/Deegan is that he worked as a weaver or Silk Dyer in Dublin in the late 1840s. His occupation is shown on the death certificates of 2 of his children who migrated to Australia as Silk Dyer and on his South Dublin Workhouse records his occupation as either Weaver or Silk Weaver.

“Our” Duigans lived in the Upper Coombe, an ancient thoroughfare of the south of Dublin. It was in the Coombe that the Dublin’s cloth industry developed and the French Huguenots introduced silk weaving. The Coombe was one of the poorest areas of Dublin and silk workers lived in cramped tenement blocks alongside the Coombe.
