Believe there were two that went to Nova Scotia, father and son possibly in or about 1782. Dennis married Ann McAnalty in New York July 21, 1779. He received a grant of land in Digby, N.S. in 1784, at which time there were 2 persons listed in his family. The second Dennis Dowling married Mary Edison and they came to Upper Canada (Ontario) in 1811. I have descendent information on Dennis and Mary, but am attempting to make a concrete connection to the roots in New York. Many thanks.

Narrative

Excerpt from The Haggan Papers: Occasional Papers, by Ida Louise Haggan, edited by Karen Bailey, Elgin County Library, Bayham Twp, Ont., 1978

The gravestones of the Edison family are to be found in five different cemeteries in the neighborhood of Vienna. Probably the oldest of these is on the northwest corner of Lot 8, Concession I, Bayham [township] about a mile west of the Otter Creek, on the south side of County Road 42.

The father, John Edison, apparently made the original application for this lot, as his name appears on the original township map, but was crossed off, and the name of Moses, the son, was written underneath. Family tradition maintains that the father, “Tory John,” and his wife, Sarah (Ogden) Edison lived here with the son Moses, and were buried here in the little plot on the rise of land not far from the road. A son, Adonijah, who died in August, 1825, was buried here. Over the years the group of stones which once stood here, have gradually disappeared until, by the early 1960’s, not one remained standing.

JOHN EDISON was born in Holland, and when three years of age was brought to America by his widowed mother. He had no brothers. They settled in Caldwell, N.J., 8 m. from Newark, where the widow, who never married again, deceased and left her valuable estate to her son. These comprised Samuel, married Nancy Simpson, Adonijah married Nancy Williams; Thomas [[ married Margaret Fitzgerald ]], Margaret married William Saxton; Catherine married Peter Weaver, and Mary married Dennis Dowling. They all removed from Digby in 1811 to Township of Bayham, District of London now in Elgin County, Ontario. Samuel died at Vienna, in October, 1865, aged 103 years. Excerpt from
Edison Papers, Edison Miller and Affiliated Families; Thomas Alva Edison and His Family Tree

Edison, John. 1724? -1825? Spelled “Edeson” in some records. Great-grandfather of TAE. According to most accounts, he and his widowed mother immigrated to the colonies from the Netherlands in 1730. Recent research casts doubts on that assertion and suggests that the family had been in America for several generations by the time John was born. He may have been the grandson or great-grandson of Pieter Marcellus van Beest, who settled in what is now Bergen County, New Jersey, in 1674. Other research speculates that the Edison family was British rather than Dutch, and that John may be the grandson of John Eddison (1658-1728) of Yorkshire, whose son Thomas (b. ca. 1700) fled with his family to Holland to escape religious persecution and subsequently died on the voyage to America. A family tradition that John was a wealthy New York City banker, which found its way into print as early as 1885, is almost certainly not true. He owned a tract of land in Caldwell, New Jersey, and married Sarah Ogden on October 10, 1765. They had nine[[?]] children: Samuel Ogden, Adonijah (1772-1825), Thomas (1777-1850), Mary (Dowling) (ca. 1779-1841), Sarah (Wilson) (1781-1837), Moses (1782-1849), Marcellus[[?]] (b. 1784[[?]]), Catharine (Weaver) (1785-1872), and Margaret (Saxton) (1791-1879). A Loyalist during the American Revolution, he was imprisoned in Morristown, New Jersey, for more than a year, and his life was spared only because of his connections with the influential Ogden family. In 1783, he moved with his family to Digby, Nova Scotia, where he engaged in farming and held a number of minor government positions. In 1811 the family moved to Elgin County, Ontario, where he spent the remainder of his life. According to one source, his tombstone bears a death date of 1825 and indicates that he died at the age of 101. Other sources give his probable birth year as 1727.

c.1776
He joined the Royal Standard about the year 1776, and was employed in the secret service, and served faithfully through the American war.

John Ederson (possibly John Edison) was called in to appear before the Council of Safety of New Jersey, and voluntarily took the Oaths of Abjuration and Allegiance according to the Law of the State, and entered into recognizance for Security to appear at the next Court of General Quarter Sessions of Essex and there answer to objections against him by the State, and was discharged.

Bef. 2 Jul 1777
John Edison had evidently been charged with High Treason and committed to the Common Gaol at New Ark, in the County of Essex to await trial.

2 Jul 1777
The Council of Safety of New Jersey ordered that John Edison, and other named prisoners, be removed immediately from the Gaol at New Ark, to a more distant and secure place in the State, and be confined in the Common Gaol at Morristown.

12 Jan 1778

He said he did not know of the "Act for Compensation to be made the Loyalists" until this time, and that it was too late to file a claim, there being no opportunity to do so.

18 Jul 1784
He appears in the Digby Muster Roll as a family of nine (an eighth child, Margaret, was born at Marshalltown in 1791).

8 Feb 1786
He swore an oath before the Justice of Peace at Digby, and filed claim to Great Britain, for compensation of 75 acres of land, a house, a black mare, 15 sheep, three bee hives, and time and suffering as a prisoner.

15 Feb 1786
His claim for loyalist compensation was D.d(?)

6 Mar 1786

Narrative

Excerpt from: The Haggan Papers: Occasional Papers, by Ida Louise Haggan, edited by Karen Bailey, Elgin County Library, Bayham Twp, Ont., 1978
