Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps Origins
Although a formal military nursing service did not exist in the army prior to the late 19th century, nursing care was provided to the army during the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603) and the English Civil War and Interregnum (1642-1660) when Parliament employed nurses at the three military hospitals in London. During the 18th century, Matrons and nurses worked in military hospitals but the training and level of care was not of a high standard, this was not unique to military hospitals but typical of healthcare at the time.
World War Two
With the outbreak of World War Two, nurses once again found themselves serving all over the world, including Norway, Iceland, Greece, Ceylon and South Africa. The changing working conditions and wartime shortages led to changes in uniform. Khaki slacks and battledress blouses replaced the grey and scarlet ward dress and rank insignia was adopted to signify the officer status of the nurses. In the Far East the fall of Hong Kong and Singapore led to many army nurses being captured by the Japanese and enduring the terrible hardships and deprivations of the Far East prisoner-of-war camps.
Belfast Telegraph 14 December 1940:
"NURSES OF THE R.V.H. - YEAR'S PRIZE WINNERS. - THREE MEDALS AWARDED.
Prizes won during the year by nurses of the Royal Victoria Hospital have been announced as follows: -
First year.- Anatomy-Norse Margaret E. Love. Physiology - Nurse Gertrude A McKnight. Hygene - Nurse Marion H Jenks.
Second year.- Medicine - Nurse Ena Bell. Surgery - Nurse Irene L Young.
Final Year.- Gold medal - Nurse Jean Elizabeth Scott. Silver medal - Nurse Anna May Nutt. Bronze medal - Nurse Beatrice Olivia Dowling.
Highest marks in first year - Nurse Elizabeth J Gray. Highest marks in third year - J Elizabeth Scott."
Belfast Telegraph 28 February 1944:
"ON ULSTER ROLL OF HONOUR. THE MISSING NURSE. TRAINED IN THE R.V.H.
"Sister Beatrice Olivia Kerr Dowling, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S Dowling, Woodview, Bessbrook, missing. A member of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Nursing Service, she was trained in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. She joined up almost a year ago, and was sent to East Africa.
Research Notes: It is not known at present how our Beatrice was killed at sea. However, the most possible scenario at present is that she was on board His Majesty's Hospital Ship St David which was sunk by German warplanes (Henschel 293) on 24 January 1944 40 kilometers south of Anzio with 96 lives lost. The wreck site was identified 9 November 2011. She was returning from the Anzio beach-head with allied wounded and the clearly marked hospital ship was deliberately sunk.

Royal Bank of Canada History Website; Second World War Roll of Honour: Roland Dowlen
"Lieutenant R. Dowlen, Royal Army Service Corps, 38, gave his life under particularly tragic circumstances. An accomplished linguist, Dowlen was seconded to the Intelligence Corps on special duty and had been dropped by parachute behind the lines to serve with the Maquis. He was captured while carrying out these hazardous duties and immediately sent to a prisoner of war camp at St. Flossenberg, where he spent twelve months in solitary confinement. On March 29, 1945, together with several other British Intelligence Officers, he was executed. Dowlen entered the bank at Paris, France in October 1923 and ten years later was transferred to London, England branch, enlisting from there on September 24, 1941."
