I am new to this list so am not familiar with previous postings.

My ggGrandfather Richard Dooly was born in Queens County (now Laois or
Leix), Ireland in 1804. He married Catherine Hickey in Ireland, had three
children there (Patrick, Thomas and John) and then immigrated to the US,
settling in Green County, Wisconsin. They had four more children in
Wisconsin: Richard, Mary, Edmund and James.

Richard and some of his children spelled their name "Dooly" and others
"Dooley," though the latter is the used by all the family today.

All of their children had big families and most stayed in the Green
County/Rock County areas of Wisconsin.

I am most interested in learning the names of Richard's parents and where he
was born in Ireland.

If anyone has any information on this family, I would appreciate your
contacting me.

My family was originally from County Laois and immigrated to Wisconsin in the 1840's. Richard Dooly was born in 1804 in Queens County. He married Catherine Hickey, daughter of Patrick Hickey and ??? Conway. Richard and Catherine had at least three sons born before emigrating; Patrick, born 19 Nov 1839, Thomas, born 4 Mar 1842 and John M., born 28 June 1844.

I do not know where in Laois they were from nor do I know anything about Richard's parents or siblings.

I would be glad to share information -- just tell me how to do so.

Subject: Re: Dooly, Dooleys in County Laois

<< File: dooleybook.doc >> << File: ATT00044.txt >> Greetings, Brian,

Richard and Catherine Hickey got married in Ireland and had three sons there before leaving for the US. Supposedly Catherine's brother who was already in Wisconsin paid their fare. Their fourth son was born in Walworth County, Wisconsin in 1846 so I doubt that any of this part of the family was listed in Griffith's.
I don't know of any siblings, either, so I'm not a lot of help.
If we use the normal naming convention used in Ireland, Richard's father's name would have been Patrick but, since Catherine's father's name was Patrick, it might be that Richard's father's name was Richard. Another possibility is Thomas, since that's the second son. Who knows?
In the IGI I see an Edward Dooley and Catherine Walshe with a son Richard christened 11 Jun 1857 in Rosenallis. Richard and Catherine had a son Edmund/Edward so there's a possibility of a link here. Edward would probably have been Richard's younger brother or nephew.
It's interesting but there was a William Dooley who was born in Laois in 1814 who settled in the same part of Wisconsin as Richard. I have not been able to tie these families together at this point. William was born 14 Mar 1814 in Queens County and is buried in Exeter, Green County, WI.
I will look up your files on Family Tree Maker.
I am going to try to attach the "Dooley book" which I copied from Family Tree Maker to Word. It is 131 pages so if you have a problem opening it up, please let me know. I have not tried to do this before so it may not work.

==============================
Name shown as "Katherine" in a number of Death Records of her children, e.g. James Dooly.

Death record at the Monroe County Court House shows husband's name as Patrick and needs to be rechecked.

Per Carol Melo's note; Katherine's brother, name unknown, sent the money for the trip to United States. They came to East Troy, Wi.

The 1850 and 1855 census show a James Hickey in Hudson, Walworth County. There is no Hudson on today's map. The fact that Richard and Catherine named one of their sons "James" may indicate that this might be the brother who paid their way to America. There were several other Hickeys in Hudson in the 1850 census and they might also be brothers: Morris, William and one in Ashippun.

Obituary from the Monroe Sentinel, Wednesday, December 22, 1886:
Mrs. Catherine Dooley died last Wednesday, at the residence of her son, James Dooley, in the 77th year of her age. Deceased had been in poor health for years, until death came to her relief. Her remains were deposited by the side of her husband, who lies in the Catholic cemetery in Albany.

Per Death Record, died of asthemia at the age of 76. It also shows her maiden name as "Dickey" rather than "Hickey" but all other references to her show "Hickey."

Obituary from the Janesville Daily Gazette, April 22, 1918:
ROCK COUNTY PIONEER DIED THIS MORNING
John Dooley, an old and respected citizen of Janesville, passed away early this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Stack, 1420 North street. He was taken suddenly ill last Wednesday with anemia, which with his advanced age proved fatal to him.
A loving father and a kind husband, his loss will be keenly felt by his widow and children. Since retiring from farm life he had made his home in this city, where he had made many acquaintances and warm friendships.
The deceased was born in Ireland in 1844 and came to America with his parents when only a year old, settling in Rock county. He grew to manhood in this county and at the age of twenty-six was united in marriage to Mary Croke. Nine children blessed this union and all survive to mourn his death. They are, seven daughters, Mrs. H. Townsend and Mrs. James Stack of this city, Mrs. D. F. Bidwell, Misses Martha J. and Abbie Dooley of Chicago, Mrs. John Murphy of Footville, Mrs. Peter Gary of Evansville, and two sons, John of this city and Arthur of Brooklyn.
Funeral services will be held from St. Patrick's church Wednesday morning at nine o'clock. Interment will be made in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

Obituary from the Janesville Daily Gazette, April 23, 1918, P5,c2 records:
Funeral services for the late John Dooley, who passed into the world beyond yesterday morning at the home of his daughter will be held tomorrow at 9 o'clock from St. Patrick's church. Interment will be made in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

Obituary from the JDG, April 24, 1918, P5:c3 records:
JOHN DOOLEY - The mortal remains of John Dooley, who passed into the world beyond last Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Stack, 1420 North St. , were laid at rest in Mt. Olivet cemetery this morning. The funeral services were conducted at St. Patrick's church at 9 o'clock, Fr. Fitzgerald celebrating the high mass and also delivering the sermon. The many friends of Mr. Dooley paid their last earthly respects to his honor by attending the funeral in large numbers. The pallbearers were: Dan Drew, Henry Home, P. J. Noonan, James Ward, James Houghton and Martin Garry.

Cause of death; pernicious anemia

Death record shows burial in Mt. Olivet cemetery but Cemetery listing does not show him.

Funeral at St. Patrick's Church, Janesville.
