Another letter from the Dooly box at Wallace State College.....

"Lincoln County Deed book I pp. 19-20
This indenture made this twenty-fifth day of the year Eighteen Hundred &
Thirteen between George D. Bibb of the County of Lincoln and State of
Kentucky attorney in fact for Charles Thurmond and Thomas Bibb, the said
Charles and Thomas being two of the heirs and distributees of Thomas
Mitchell, of the State of Georgia, deceased, by Intermarriage of the one
part and Thomas Murry of the County of Lincoln and State of
Georgia...........

[Here certain pieces of land are mentioned as belonging to Bibb and
Thurmond.]

All of the above land was granted to said Thomas Mitchell.

After the deed the letter continues by saying, "What does the above mean?
After consulting with [name of noted genealogist], I put it together
this way based on what we know of Thomas Bibb, Thomas Mitchell, and
George Dooly. Elizabeth Dooly, sister to all the Dooly boys, married
first to Thomas Mitchell ((the Thomas to whom the above mentioned land
grants were issued). They had two daughters, one of whom married Charles
Thurmond and the other married Thomas Murry. Thomas Mitchell died
1788-1789 in Wilkes (later Lincoln) Co., GA. Note that Thomas Bibb and
George Dooly appraised Mitchells estate and Thomas Bibb witnessed the
deed where Elizabeth Mitchell sold her husband's land in Washington
County. Also remember the curious way that the George Dooly court case
in THE WILKES COUNTY PAPERS was worded, about leaving the papers with a
woman whom they believed was George Dooly's sister and who was riding
with Thomas Bibb. Anyway, the widow Elizabeth Dooly Mitchell married
Thomas Bibb and moved to Kentucky along with her brother, George Dooly
and her son-in-law Charles Thurmond."

REVOLUTION - Randal Griffin lived in what became Abbeville Dist. SC

war!"

CLARKE, 11/10/1786, both of Wilkes County, Ga. for 200 pounds Sterling,
400 acres on Long Branch of Mill Creek, adjoining lands of Dean, Dooly,

Hi Dooly List

Several years ago I visited Wallace State College in Hanceville, AL.
Robert Davis, head of the Genealogy Dept had once done some sort of paper
on Col. John Dooly. He had a box of papers there called the Dooly box
that he allowed people to rummage through at will. In that box were
numerous letters back and forth about what might be the connection of
these very individuals that we are now wondering about - the Mitchells
and the Doolys.

For what it's worth here are some excerpts from some of the letters.
Perhaps someone can make better sense out of them than I.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One letter stated; Here are the facts that we have. Colonel John Dooly
had a wife named Diana and children named John "Jack"[??], Thomas,
Susannah, and John Mitchell Dooly. A neighbor and close associate of
Col. John Dooly was Thomas Mitchell, who had been a lieutenant in the
same company in the 3rd Georgia Continental Battalion as Dooly's brothers
Thomas and George Dooly. Mitchell and these Doolys were inseparable.
Col. John had two grandchildren named Diana M. and Mary M. Bond. We have
never found absolute proof of what the M. stood for.
The enclosed documented materials will show that since I corresponded
with Mr. __, we have learned that the above Thomas Mitchell was married
to Elizabeth Dooly, sister of Col. John, George, Thomas, and probably a
William and a Robert Dooly. After Thomas Mitchell died in 1789 in Wilkes
County GA (later Lincoln Co., GA), his widow, Elizabeth Dooly Mitchell,
married Thomas Bibb and with Col. George Dooly they all moved to Kentucky
around 1792. These matters are a bit further confused by the fact that
this Thomas Mitchell had a son named John Dooly Mitchell while in 1805
ANOTHER Thomas Mitchell died who ALSO had a son named John Dooly
Mitchell, whose attorney by the way was John Mitchell Dooly, son of Col.
John Dooly.
All of the above we have proven. Now some speculation comes in. I am
convinced that Col. John Dooly was married to Diana MITCHELL, whom I
speculate was the niece of the Thomas Mitchell who died in 1789 and the
sister of the Thomas Mitchell who died in 1805. I also believe that
Diana was the daughter of Robert and Tanner Mitchell of Abbeville, SC.
The enclosed goes into more detail. Diana is not mentioned in Tanner
Mitchell's will nor are her Dooly children. However, Tanner Mitchell
does mention a grandson named James Griffin. Diana Dooly married
Randolph (Randal) Griffin after the Revolution. (Col. John Dooly was
murdered by Loyalists in the late 1780's). We can prove Diana's marriage
to Griffin."
NOTE; None of the enclosures were with this letter at the time I found
it.
Hi Dooly List
Several years ago I visited Wallace State College in Hanceville, AL.
Robert Davis, head of the Genealogy Dept had once done some sort of paper
on Col. John Dooly. He had a box of papers there called the Dooly box
that he allowed people to rummage through at will. In that box were
numerous letters back and forth about what might be the connection of
these very individuals that we are now wondering about - the Mitchells
and the Doolys.
For what it's worth here are some excerpts from some of the letters.
Perhaps someone can make better sense out of them than I.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One letter stated; Here are the facts that we have. Colonel John Dooly
had a wife named Diana and children named John "Jack"[??], Thomas,
Susannah, and John Mitchell Dooly. A neighbor and close associate of
Col. John Dooly was Thomas Mitchell, who had been a lieutenant in the
same company in the 3rd Georgia Continental Battalion as Dooly's brothers
Thomas and George Dooly. Mitchell and these Doolys were inseparable.
Col. John had two grandchildren named Diana M. and Mary M. Bond. We have
never found absolute proof of what the M. stood for.

The enclosed documented materials will show that since I corresponded
with Mr. __, we have learned that the above Thomas Mitchell was married
to Elizabeth Dooly, sister of Col. John, George, Thomas, and probably a
William and a Robert Dooly. After Thomas Mitchell died in 1789 in Wilkes
County GA (later Lincoln Co., GA), his widow, Elizabeth Dooly Mitchell,
married Thomas Bibb and with Col. George Dooly they all moved to Kentucky
around 1792. These matters are a bit further confused by the fact that
this Thomas Mitchell had a son named John Dooly Mitchell while in 1805
ANOTHER Thomas Mitchell died who ALSO had a son named John Dooly
Mitchell, whose attorney by the way was John Mitchell Dooly, son of Col.
John Dooly.

All of the above we have proven. Now some speculation comes in. I am
convinced that Col. John Dooly was married to Diana MITCHELL, whom I
speculate was the niece of the Thomas Mitchell who died in 1789 and the
sister of the Thomas Mitchell who died in 1805. I also believe that
Diana was the daughter of Robert and Tanner Mitchell of Abbeville, SC.
The enclosed goes into more detail. Diana is not mentioned in Tanner
Mitchell's will nor are her Dooly children. However, Tanner Mitchell
does mention a grandson named James Griffin. Diana Dooly married
Randolph (Randal) Griffin after the Revolution. (Col. John Dooly was
murdered by Loyalists in the late 1780's). We can prove Diana's marriage
to Griffin."

NOTE; None of the enclosures were with this letter at the time I found
it.

Maria and Flora,
Could this be the brother of Colonel John Dooley of Revolutionary Fame in
Wilkes County Georgia?

"History of Lincoln County Georgia by Clinton Perryman Chapter III page 7. Leaders: There were two outstanding leaders Elijah Clarke and John Dooley. Another leader of promise was a brother of John Dooley, Captain Thomas Dooly. He was killed in a skirmish with the Indians near the Oconee River, on July 22, 1776 while returning from Virginia with a band of recruits for the Continental Brigade in Georgia. This was his only engagement but he fought with courage, determination and unconquerably spirit being murdered by the Indians while trying to defend himself.
Other pages of interest in this same book , concerning this, is 119,120, & 121.

According to my findings, Patrick Dooly (died 1768) was the father of Col. George Dooly, Elizabeth (Betsy) Dooly, Col John Dooley (b 1740 m 1769 d 1780) and Captain Thomas Dooly who was murdered 7/22/1776.

I did a lot of study in the beginning on this line, but with the help of Dorothy Ward proved that this was not my line.

I have accumulated lots of data on this line, especially on Colonel John Dooley. The University of Georgia Library has a lot of books on this subject, especially The Battle of Kettle Creek which was Col John Dooley's biggest.

Hi, In a recent search of Henry Dooly married to Martha Anderson I found a lot of information on the WFT CD's. CD # 7, Tree # 2877, CD # 15, Tree # 3465, CD # 19 Tree # 526, CD # 20, Tree # 558, CD # 20, Tree # 557, CD # 7, Tree 2688. You can find these at any local library that has a Heritage Room. Broderbund, 1998. They aren't always complete or correct, but they sure can help you when you get to a dead end.

A short summary of what I found: Thomas Dooley- married to Rebeckah had a child Henry D. born abt 1713 in Northern Ireland and died Bef 1773 in Virginia. He married Martha Anderson abt 1734 in Virginia, daughter of Georgia Anderson and Elizabeth Crawford .
Henry & Martha Anderson Dooly had 11 children of which one was named James S b 1746 Bedford CO, Va d. June 17, 1824, Columbia, Maury CO. Tn... James married 1. Margaret McKenney 1766 in Richmond, Va. 2. Rachel Moore. Henry and Margaret McKenney had 3 children, James, Jr., William (who changed his name to DULA.), and Catherine. Children of James and Rachel were: Eason B, Parris Furchase, and Sarah Sallie.

It goes on and on. I also want to say that there may be other CD's and Trees with your information on them. I may not have checked every Henry Dooley.

This is very intriguing to me because we believe our the Dooly name was changed to Dula for about one generation, to be exact, his name was William.
They used many other variations.

Sincerely,

Mary

Sincerely,

Mary

I have found Robert Dowling/Dooley in the Colony in Essex Co in the very late 1600's and believe him to be the parent of Henry Dooley who married Martha Anderson.
I do know that Martha's father George was also born in the Colonies for I find the name there about the same time that I find the Dooley name, not too far from each other. I located this information about two years ago and I have been trying to put it all together. I believe that the children of Robert were Henry, Abraham, Thomas and proberly James but so far none of this is pined down for sure.
I was in the Court House in Essex Co and there are many volumns that have not been researched there. I shall however, have to leave it to some of you younger ones to do the rest of the work for I am no longer able to go alone across country and do the work.

Subject: Dooley

Hi, My name is Joyce Marschman and I am researching the family line of Henry
Dooley and Martha "Patty" Anderson from Bedford Co., VA. My line descends
from Henry's son John Henry Dooley and Elizabeth Birks.

I recently found your name while doing some Dooley research. Are you also
working on this family? I would be happy to share my information if you are
interested.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Joyce

Thanks, Brian
Everything came through perfect. I have Family Tree Maker 5. Don't know
why I couldn't read the first one, but got all of these you sent.

Are you originally from England. Sure would love to come over there and do
some research. Can't for awhile with two kids in college keeping me poor.
Are you related to Robert Dowling? Have you found any references about this
father and sons in England? Some researchers think Henry Dooley was the son
of Thomas Dooling who entered the states through Barbados as an indentured
servant. Ever heard of that one?

Thanks again for all the info. Joyce

I have found Robert Dowling/Dooley in the Colony in Essex Co in the very late
1600's
and believe him to be the parent of Henry Dooley who married Martha Anderson.
I do know that Martha's father George was also born in the Colonies for I find
the name there about the same time that I find the Dooley name, not too far
from each
other. I located this information about two years ago and I have been trying
to put it
all together. I believe that the children of Robert were Henry, Abraham,
Thomas and
proberly James but so far none of this is pined down for sure.
I was in the Court House in Essex Co and there are many volumns that have not
been researched there. I shall however, have to leave it to some of you
younger ones to do the rest of the work for I am no longer able to go alone
across country and do the work.

Sincerely,

Mary

If you have any questions about this information, please don't hesitate to let me. Know. I'll help anyway that I can.

Subject: [DOOLEY-L] Henry Dooley Immigrant ancestor

Sincerely,

Mary

If you have any questions about this information, please don't hesitate to let me. Know. I'll help anyway that I can.

Subject: [DOOLEY-L] Henry Dooley Immigrant ancestor

Sincerely,

Mary

If you have any questions about this information, please don't hesitate to let me. Know. I'll help anyway that I can.

Sincerely,

Mary

If you have any questions about this information, please don't hesitate to let me. Know. I'll help anyway that I can.
