Just wondering if anyone knows anything about these people.

John Dooley born Feb, 1866 in Wexford, Ireland and Anna (Annie) O'Brien born
Oct 1868. They are my great grandparents. I have copies of the 1900 census
and 1910 census. According to these they came to the USA in 1888 from
Wexford. I know from my dad they went to Albany , NY to stay with relatives
supposedly hers. He does not know who but a great Aunt of mine mentioned a
Bridget Enright. They were in NY for the birth of their first 2 children Mary
and Thomas. My grandfather, James was born in 1894 in Newark, NJ.

According to the 1900 census living in the same apartment house were Patrick
Gleason born Jan 1867, wife, Mary born Dec 1869 and his brother in laws
Michael O'Brien born Feb 1872 and William O'Brien born Dec 1876. The reason I
mention this is that they also came from Ireland in 1888 per the census. If
Michael and William are brother in laws to Patrick Gleason then it is possible
wife Mary is an O'Brien and they are related to my John and Anna (O'Brien)
    Dooley.

My dad remembers hearing that either the O'Brien or Dooley family were
railroad builders. Intersting thing is that according to the 1900 census
Michael and William O'Brien are listed under occupation as RR Laborer and John
    Dooley is listed as
RR Inspector. My dad also remembers hearing that John Dooley was from a
family of many boys and one of the brothers was named Mark, referred to as
    "Mark the Dandy".

My Dooley's came from Wexford County about 1888. If you have family that came from Ireland and would be on the 1900 census you should check that out. The 1900 census will tell you where they came from and you might get lucky as to area. My copy actually had Wexford written on it.
What I know is that John Dooley came with Anna O'Brien. They first went to NY and stayed with family. This might have been a family that included Bridget Enright. I believe they were in Albany unfortunately if they are on a census there it would be the 1890 one and that one I believe is not available. By 1900 they were living in Newark, NJ because that is where my grandfather was born in 1894. The children of John Dooley and Anna O'Brien are Mary, Thomas, James, William, Ann, George and Margaret. They also had a John but he died young. Thanks Lynn

Citation Text: Hi Brian, Yes, I am that source from 1999. Now I need to see why I changed the year on John. I do have a picture of the tombstone which I took myself at Mt Olivet Cemetery and that appears to say 1866 for John. I have a copy of Ann's birth record which says she was born 12/9/1866. I also have a copy of John's brother, Owen which says his birthday is 6/15/1866. Unless John is Owen's twin John could not have been born in 1866. And I have no reason to suspect he was a twin.

John, Thomas , William and Mary are buried with John and Anna. They died in 1912, 1928, 1969 and 1918. I have been to Ireland since that 1999 note and met some of the extended O'Brien family and Dooley family. It was a treat to see where John and Anna lived growing up, the ruins of their homes and hearing the story of running away to the USA was true. We saw where Anna with the help of her sister, Bridget, hid traveling clothes and then on a Sunday instead of going to church she and John headed out on their journey. They were clearly expecting Mary at the time of their departure.

Still wish I knew for sure where in NY they went when arriving in NY as well as who they went to stay with.

    Thanks for your reply. Lynn

    Subject: [WEXFORD-L] DOOLEY -O'BRIEN- GLEASON

Thanks Lynn

Hi Maria; I think you have been a big help to me. This Thomas Dooley may be my gt gt grandfather. I think you may find him in Lee Co., VA married to Mary Elizabeth Davis. The childrens names are right to be my family. We have a James W. and William H. William Harrison Dooley is my gt grandfather and he was born just across the river in Claiborne Co., Tennessee. Thomas is found on the 1830 census of Claiborne Co., Tn along with a James Dooley senior, Basil , Charles, James Jr. and an Elizabeth who may be Mary Elizabeth. The James W. Duley (Dooley) would also be about right to have been this Thomas Dooleys brother as found on the 1830 census as it lists two males under the age of 5. If you have other ties to this Thomas and data, I would really appreciate hearing from you. I have all of the data of William Harrison Dooley including the fact that Thomas later married a Margaret _unknown and we also know children of that marriage.
I would really like to work with you on this. Thanks Aubrey Charles Dooley agdooley@mcia.com -----Original Message-----
