Narrative

Fanny Elizabeth Jones appears to have stopped using the name Fanny and is mostly known as Elizabeth Jones or Elizabeth Davies.

Betty Dowling, née Davies [1928-] said, "Mum was very well-known in the local area because she was a good midwife, they'd all try to get her for their births. She did both ends because she was also called upon, sometimes late at night, to lay-out the dead too. She was sought after because she knew what to do and say. Being called away for a birth or a death was a regular thing she'd have to walk or they might come for her in a cart. People didn't have much money so they'd just giver her things... food... anything. When I went out to work every week she'd take my wages and gave my five pounds back, she was strict with us on that but we had so little she had no choice."

After Betty was married she lived a long way from Clee Hill, Shropshire in Ramsgate in Kent. Elizabeth came all the way to the wedding in 1947 and Betty bought her a warm overcoat as Elizabeth could not afford good clothes. Niece, Veronica Jordan, who was 7 years old when Elizabeth died, says, "She loved visiting her daughter Betty in Ramsgate and used to get so excited about going on the funfair's at the seaside town and winning things".

Betty remembers that Elizabeth died before her father because she was heavily pregnant with James at the time of her father's death and missed her fathers funeral. She does however, remember being at home, at 2 Clee Hill, when her mother had died as she recalls seeing her laid out in the bedroom that was a little untidy. Betty cleaned up and laid out her mother in the second bedroom.

Michael Dowling [1950-] says, "To the best of my knowledge I was at the house at 2 Ludlow Road, Clee Hills at the time of Grandmother´s death. Dad [Alexander Dowling] was not with us on this occasion.
I was about 5 or 6 years old in 1955/56 and, as I remember, I went up this very narrow staircase with a candle, which led from the living area and large fireplace to the bedroom that I was to sleep in. There were two small bedrooms and the wooden doors creaked on opening. After going to bed I got up after hearing some noise coming from the next room. I went in and saw a lady lying still in the bed, I believe this was grandmother and It was dark despite two candles on either side of the bed lighting up her face. It was very eerie, I remember Mum was there at the side of the bed in front of me. I saw a frail and gaunt person lying in bed staring up to the ceiling . As I approached the bed I was quickly removed back to my room.

I do not remember events of the next day which is a bit of a mystery to me. Of course it could be possible that she was seriously ill and taken away next day and died at Tenbury, but I do not believe this to be the case. I believe grandmother died at home that night."

Narrative

Depression Led to Suicide
"Unemployed builder Mr Walter Davies of Tenbury Road, Clee Hill, was so depressed about being unable to find work that he committed suicide, South Shropshire Coroner Mr Tony Sibey decided last week.

And Mr Sibey said at the inquest: "it is perhaps not insignificant that a suicide note found in Mr Davies' van was written on the back of a letter of reference from his previous employer relating to his redundancy three years ago.

The body of Mr Davies, aged 55, was found in Dhustone Quarry, Clee Hill on November 23 by a Hereford salesman, Mr Frank Morgan. A single barrelled shot gun lay beside him.

Miss Brenda Butcher who lived with the deceased for ten years at Tenbury Road, told the coroner Mr Davies had attempted to commit suicide several weeks before.

She said: "He attempted to take his life with tablets and drink. He was very low and depressed all day when I came in from work he was not at home.

"I went up to the Dhustone, which was a favourite spot of his, and I found him. He was drowsy but I managed to pull him round and get him home."

Miss Butcher said Mr Davies was receiving medical help for his depression but was unaware that he had suffered from severe coronary heart disease which the post-mortem revealed.

"He always said he was tired" said Miss Butcher, "But I put it down to boredom at being unemployed and staying at home. He was very depressed and lost all his self confidence".

Mr Davies wrote in the suicide notes he left: "What I have done is nothing to do with Brenda, She has been nothing but an angel to me in the past ten years and I have loved her until the end. I cannot face any more of the world."

Brenda Butcher in 2013 was rewsidning at 6 Clee Vantage (right hand side off main road) Tel. 01584 890064.

Narrative

Siblings at least: Mary and two males unknown (one who did something wrong and was transported to Australia in a "Coffin Ship" and the other possibly Arthur.)

Bridget was shown as living at home, with her husband Thomas Dowling and children, in Dysartbeagh, on the night of 31st March 1901 in the Census. She is shown as 47 years of age. The census shows her as a married Roman Catholic who can Read & Write, speaking English as opposed to Irish. Typically of the time the census does not show an occupation for the wife.

Also appeared to have half sisters and brother(Patrick) surnamed Perette. Confusingly Patrick was supposed to be a first cousin to Daniel Joseph Dowling (son of Thomas and Bridget). As he is one of Bridget's children some facts here are incorrect.

Narrative

Parish Records indicate that Thomas is the fifth child.
Siblings: John, Bridget, Michael, Mary, Judith, James and John.
However, Michael Joseph Dowling of Westfields states a different list of siblings with Thomas as the first child followed by Michael, Edward, John, Julia and Kate.

Thomas is probably our first confirmed relative. Michael Joseph Dowling, of Westfields, believed him to be the oldest son but this may be because he inherited the farm. This may be supported by the fact that his parents, by parish records, named there last son John possibly because the first died.

Thomas was baptised in the family home Dysartbeagh on 29th October 1843 to Edward and Julia Doolan. The records of this are poorly written and very likely subject to misspelling. Present at his baptism were 'Godparents' James Bergan or Behgan and Ellen Rooney (possibly an aunt). It is possible that he was born on or just before his baptism day.

Confirmation That Thomas was born in 1843 is deduced from his death registration stating he was 66 years old at death. This would have been fairly accurate as the information was probably supplied by Bridget. The search of the Baptism Register of St. Fintan’s revealed no other Dowlings born around that time that could be this ancestor. A priest would probably have spelt the surname how it sounded and in a broad Irish accent Dowling sounds like Doolan. Thomas's Mother's name of Judy Hogan comes from other Baptism records on either side of this record.

The siblings according to Michael Joseph, were:
1st Thomas
2nd Michael
3rd Edward
4th John
5th Julia
6th Kate

This list is contradicted from the likely list obtainable from the Parish Records themselves. The records viewed show a number of Dowlings but at the appropriate times different spellings are used. Below is an abridged transcript of the records which are most likely to refer to relatives (words enclosed in brackets indicate words that were difficult to read). The last pair of names before the location are the "sponsors" often shown "Sps" abbreviated to "//", these are generally the 'God-parents'.:

Thomas’s father was probably illiterate and not in a position to correct the priest’s spelling. I am satisfied that these are our ancestors despite the difference between the above list and the one supplied by Michael Joseph. This is because:

a) the names are close to those expected (note here that when Thomas married Bridget Phelan in Kyle his name was shown as Doolin and this is definitely our ancestor),
b) the records identify dates at around the correct time. If the Thomas born on 29th October 1843 was the same as our ancestor Thomas who died on 7th March 1910 he would have been 66 years old. That is just what the Death Certificate states.
c) the location for Thomas, and the others above, in the Parish records shows Dysartbeagh as the home location. This is a small place with only a few houses and whilst there may be many Dowlings the odds are against two families of similar names.

In his early childhood Thomas would have lived through the Great Irish Famine, from 1845 to 1847 as a baby and was ten years old at the start of the 1853-1898 Great Emigration to the U.S.A.. It appears that his older brother, John, died young so Thomas was liable to inherit the farm. Otherwise, he may well have considered emigrating. It is possible that he may have witnessed his brothers, Edward(by Michael Joseph Dowlings's list) and John, leave Ireland to become Millers in America. They may have written, if they could, of the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865.

He grew up on the farm at Dysartbeagh. As young man he may well have went to the local pubs and dances with other local people. However, from a town called Kyle near Ballaghmore, a good horse ride away, he met a girl called Bridget Phelan. This may have something to do with a relationship between the Phelans and the Pirettes who appear related to the Dowlings as well.

Figure 1: A Typical Irish Cottage from a postcard made around the time of Thomas' Life. Note the thatched roof and peat tools. Dysartbeagh looked similar to this before modifications

Thomas, at twenty one years, would have had to comply with new laws in 1864 which required the registration of births, deaths and marriages.

In the priest’s house for the Chapel at Kyle I came across the following Marriage Record. It was traditional, as in many other countries, for the marriage to take place in the brides hometown.

Parish Register of Marriages for Kyle and Knock made by Parish Priest P. Ryan

1875
November
9th Thomas Doolan to Bridget Phelan.
Mrs Thomas Kirwan & Mary Phelan

I have no doubts that it refers to this Thomas, at this time aged 32 years, even with the misspelling. This may be because the priest at Kyle was unfamiliar with the name or writing it phonetically. It is, however, interesting to note that it is spelt the same way as in the Parish Records. The marriage record was acknowledged by Thomas and Bridget signing with there mark: ' X '.

Further, proof comes the witnesses as Bridget had a sister Mary and the Dowlings were associated with the Kirwans as Thomas’s own brother Michael married Bridget Kirwan. These details are acknowledged as correct by Mrs Anne Kirwan.

Bridget was born in Lackey, a townsland in the Parish of Kyle between Roscrea and Borris-in-Ossory, in Queen’s County. Her father was Daniel Phelan hence Thomas naming his second son Daniel. Daniel Phelan married Anne Delaney in his first marriage and Elizabeth Hyde or Hyle in his second. Daniel and Elizabeth had several children including Bridget, Mary (who married Martin Lawlor and died at the age of 110 years) and a brother who did something wrong and was transported to Australia in a "Coffin Ship".

Bridget had several step-sisters who were surnamed Perette and step-brother named Patrick Perette who was the son of one of Thomas’s sisters (as Mrs. Anne Kirwan states that Patrick was the 1sy cousin of Daniel Joseph Dowling.)

From their marriage Thomas and Bridget had the following children:

Child’s Name Birth Death Spouse
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 Edward 1877 11.10.1950 None
2 Daniel Joseph 16.05.1878 7.05.1930 Mary Burke
3 John Christopher 1881 20.02.1942 Mary Anne Delaney
4 Julia May 1885 11.04.1953 Paul Maher
5 Elizabeth (Lily) 1885 21.11.1971 Peter Gorman
6 Thomas Francis 1889 26.11.1918 None
7 Michael 1890 25.01.1966 Mary Josie McEvoy

The children were brought up in the farm in Dysartbeagh. Thomas, no doubt aided by his sons, probably worked a good proportion of Dysartbeagh Townsland’s 438 acres. The farmhouse was built on one level of stone with a thatched roof. Inside many of the rooms would have been communal and certainly the kitchen and living room would probably have been one room.

Figure 2: Interior of a typical Irish Cottage from a postcard of the time. Note the caldron, no doubt containing potatoes, and the cot to the left.

Thomas was probably illiterate as it appears he was unable to correct misspelling of his own name and on some legal documents gave his mark with a cross. He may have taken an interest in the development of a group of people known as the "Fenians", who were fighting for Irish freedom from British rule during the 1860’s. In the later years of his life world events seemed to centre upon the rapid growth of the British Empire under Queen Victoria.

Thomas Dowling appears in the Census of Ireland 1901, for the 31st March, in Dysartbeagh as being the landholder of his own plot (number 12). He lived in a fully built '2nd class' private dwelling with stone walls but a perishable roof (thatch or wood). It had four rooms with four windows to the front of the house. There were ten out buildings. These were one stable, one cow house, two calf houses, one dairy, one piggery, one fowl house, one boiling house, one barn and one shed. The census also showed that he owned the plot next door that was leased out to William Phelan.

In Thomas's house on the night of the census were eight members of the family:
Thomas Head of Family, 55 years, Farmer, Married.
Bridget Wife, 47 years, Married.
Edward Son, 22 years, Farmer's Son, Not Married.
John, Son 19 years, Farmers son, Not Married.
Julia M, Daughter, 17 years, Farmers daughter, Not Married.
Lillie, Daughter, 14 years, Scholar, Not Married.
Thomas, Son, 12 years, Scholar, Not Married.
Michael, Son, 10 years, Scholar, Not Married.

His other son Daniel Joseph was not at home that night.

all were shown as Roman Catholic and as being able to Read & Write. In fact Thomas had learned to do so since his wedding because he had signed the census return. They were also shown as all being born in Queen's County. Erroneously they entered that they spoke English in a column that should have been left blank unless they spoke Irish. Indicating that they did not speak Gaelic to any extent.

On the 7th March 1910 Thomas, now aged 66 years, was taking a cow to a bull along a track in Knockacollis. Just beyond Castletown he collapsed and died. The body was examined the following day by the coroner for Queen’s County who diagnosed the cause of death as syncope. This is defined in medical textbooks as simply a faint which may lead to death.

Bridget died six years after on the 16th May 1916 aged 65 years.

Narrative

Daniel was the second child of Thomas Dowling and Bridget Phelan. He was born on 16th May 1878 in his fathers farmhouse at Dysartbeagh, Mountrath, Queen's County, Ireland. This farmhouse was situated about a mile down the Coolrain Road travelling from the Main Mountrath to Limerick Road (now the N7 Motorway). His birth was registered in the District of Mountrath, in the Registrar's District of Mountmellick, by his mother on 11th June 1878.

He was baptised at Mountrath and his godparents were believed to be William and Briget Bergin.

Daniel's siblings were:
1st Edward
3rd John Christopher
4th Julia Mary
5th Elizabeth (Lily)
6th Thomas
7th Michael

He was probably educated at the National School in Mountrath and went to church with the rest of his family at St. Fintan's Church also in Mountrath. Mountrath itself is about 3 miles North-east from Dysartbeagh.

After leaving school Daniel, who would have helped his father on the farm, eventually took a job working as a barman at O'Meara's in Roscrea. Here he apparently passed information to the Old Irish Republican Army about the movements of British occupying forces. Later he probably continued the practice in relation to the Black n'Tans from his own pub. The Black n’ Tans were the official name given to the semi-military police force raised by the British in 1920 for the suppression of the I.R.A. There uniforms were khaki with black hats. Local units apparently drank in his pub.

In 1910 when Daniel was 32 years old his father, a farmer, died out in the fields. Six years later his mother died leaving the home to Daniel's elder brother Edward. Edward eventually moved further up the road towards Mountrath and the family home was taken over by John Christopher Dowling.

A year later, whilst 38 years old, Daniel married Mary Burke from Mountrath on the 18th February 1917. Interestingly, this wedding took place at St. Michan's Catholic Church in North Dublin. This could have been to make it an extra special affair. The best man at the wedding was Thomas Dowling, his brother, who was to die tragically of influenza the following year. The Chief Bridesmaid was Mary's sister Bridie Burke.

As a dowry Daniel received from Mary's father, Alexander Burke, a considerable amount of property including land and a shop/public house in Market Square, Mountrath.

The couple moved into the premises above the shop which comprised as follows; Ground floor -public bar lounge and kitchen; 1st floor - three bedrooms, a hall and sitting room. It had a green frontage with a three wide windows and two separate entrances to the front ground floor. The shop name of D. J. Dowling was in gold on green above the shop front. On the pavement, in the front, would be 10 or 11 barrels on which Daniel would display his goods: tea, flour, etc....... On Market Day the barrels would keep stray cattle away from the shop frontage. Moving the barrels was often left to the children they were to have.

A year later their first child, Thomas, was born followed a year later by Alexander, then by May a year after that. There were maids employed in the house and Mary, an accomplished pianist, would often play songs on the piano. In particular Alex remembers, "Love's Sweet Song"... or as he described it, "Just a Song at Twilight."

In 1922 Daniel's wife Mary, or May as she was often called, apparently suffering from the strain of pre-natal depression in her forth pregnancy was taken into Portlaoise Hospital. She never returned from this hospital and gave birth to her fourth child Donald there. She died there aged 68 years on 13 July 1958.

From their marriage Daniel and Mary had the following children:
Child's Name; Birth Death Spouse
1 Thomas 14 May 1918 27 Mar 1990 Sally Grey
2 Alexander 23 June 1919 15 September 1992 Betty Davies
3 May 1920 1931 none
4 Donald 1922 22 September 1994 none

Now aged 44 years Daniel had to carry on the business and look after four children. He employed a Mrs Guilfoyle for this purpose although the children spent much of their time with uncles and aunts. Particularly the Phelans of Clonin (Julia and son Joe). Daniel, according to unrelated locals who knew him, was a fair man of a very well mannered nature. He would always be found smartly dressed whatever the time of day.

In the last two years of his life Daniel developed a chronic heart complaint in which the tissues of his heart became inflamed. Finally, he died on the 7th May 1930, aged only 51 years, at Market Square, Mountrath. His death was certified as due to endocarditis. His brother John was present at his death.

Had he lived, the following the following year would have probably broken his heart. His daughter May contracted meningitis and died at only the age of 11 years. It is saddening to consider the effects on an 11 year old of a recently deceased father and a mother permanently in hospital. His wife Mary finally died in hospital in 1958 and the cause of the long-term illness that took her from Daniel and the family was revealed as a brain tumour.

A cutting from a newspaper printed in 1937 reads as follows:
