I have the book "A Dowling Family of the South."

My maternal grandmother was Gussie Esther Nancy Elizabeth (Gussie) Dowling. she married Berry Lee Adams. My grandmother was 26 yrs. old when she died of a "bad heart". She left behind my mother Mary Lee Adams, Sollie Mansfield Adams, and Versa Laverne Adams. My mother was the eldest of Gussie's children. Uncle Sollie died in 1964 in a hunting accident. Aunt Versa died of cancer in 1958 (I believe that was the year).

My grandmother's father was Steven Calvess Dowling and her mother was Lavonia Forehand.

My great-uncle General Sollie Dowling lived in Indianapolis, IN with his wife, Sophia. My mother has pictures of them.

Narrative

Granddaughter Mary E Lowery said, in 2000, "Dick was a blacksmith, as was his father - Dennis DOWLING - before him, and fell in love with Mary CASEY when she returned from America to visit her mother Mary Bridget POWELL CASEY. Mary refused to stay in Ireland and Dick followed her across the sea where they married and produced 5 children. Mary returned to Ireland for her mother and brought her to USA in 1925. Mary Bridget was in poor health and only survived until 1927."

a dowling reunion in dublin -- what a hoot! My mother was a Dowling - she (and her bro/sisters) were all born in Newark NJ; her parents (father - Richard Dennis Dowling; mother - Mary Bridget Casey) came from Counties Kildare and Balatore in Ireland. The Dowlings were blacksmiths - don't have g'gfather name with me but I do know his name and village. Doubt I'd make the reunion but would love any info you may have on it, perhaps some of the cousins would even like to attend. If any of this family line sounds useful to you, I'll get the exact particulars for you.

Hi Brian.
This is my husband's family & his name was also Brian.

John DOWLING - farmer from Ireland.
/
Patrick Charles DOWLING marr 1 Elizabeth Barker PATERSON 2 Emily Ann ?
b c1842 ? Ireland
died after 1895
/
John Alexander DOWLING marr Ruth Pilkington REEVES
b c1872, Liverpool, Lancs 15 May 1895 b c1876, Huyton, Lancs
died 1918 Dunedin NZ Kirkdale, Lancs died 1927, Auckland, NZ

These last two emigrated to New Zealand with their children c1905 and are my husband's great grandparents.
I am waiting for an answer to an 1881 census lookup for the DOWLING family in Liverpool & hopefully it may give me more on Patrick's birthplace.

As you seem to be conversant with Irish parish records, are you able help me with an ancestor of mine who I am having trouble locating?

His name was Patrick BOLGER born c1824 in Powerstown, Kilkenny, Ireland; son of John BOLGER - merchant (who seems to be still alive in 1864 as per marriage cert for Patrick). I wrote to the local parish priest - Roman Catholic - but he was unable to help me. Where do you suggest I look for further information on this family?

Regards,
Margaret Dowling.

I am a descendant of the couple mentioned in the subject line. We are having a BURNETT reunion in Malvern, AR on June 6, 1998 for descendants of this couple and would appreciate any input anyone has on the ancestors of Elizabeth DOWLING BURNETT. Our records show that she came to AR during the late 1850's or early 1860's although we think we have located her in the 1860 Desha County, AR census with a father named John. We have her date of birth as August 30, 1849 in IL and her death as 16 July 1916 in AR.
We have been looking for a copy of the book, "A Dowling Family of the South by R. A. Dowling", and can not find it in AR. Do you know where we might purchase a copy of this book? Please e-mail me and let me know so I can get a copy of it.

Matt;
The Dowling Coat of arms that I have has a large lions Head on the top and as yoy said there is two gold rings around the neck. below that is a red and white bar that is directly under the head. thise is framed on the left and right by a green and gold vine. Below the red and white bar is a blue helmet surrounded by gold under the helmet is a shield with a gold boarder on the top is a blue field approximately 1/4th of the distance from the tom and on the blue field is a gold lion centered and a gold figure that looks like the club from a deck of playing cards. the rest of the shield is red with a tree in the middle with clusters of red balls on the tree and what appears to be the roots of the tree growing down towards the bootem of the shield. under the shield is a gold ribbon with the name DOWLING in a semicircle. The information that I received says that the Dowlings were one of the "Seven Septs of Leix". In the confiscations that were part of the English policy in Ireland after the "Flight of the Earls" the leading members of the Dowling Clan were transplanted to Tarbert in north Kerry in 1607 . Although they never established in the new home the power and influence they held in their ancient territory of Leix, some of them prospered and from these the dowlings of Kerry and Limerick spring. Notwithstanding this break up of the ancient clan holdings and traditional way of life, many of the rank and file of the Dowling family managed to remainnear thier ancestral possessions in Leix, and not only flourished but spread out to the adjoining counties of Carlow. Kilkenny and Wicklow. The fact that there are four place names called Ballydowling (or Dowling's town)in Wicklow is ample evidence of their vitality and power in these areas.
I have some more info that I will send later but this should tell yo some about our history. My Grandfatheer was John Russell Dowling and I can trace him back to Joplin Missouri where he was born in the late 1800's. He married Annie Mae Wright who was from Arkansas and moved west to Ok, Texas and then to CA. If you have any more Genealogy on the Dowlings what ever it might be I would sure like to see it maybe I can find out where we meet. Thanks
