    Hi Brian
Had to talk to my mum to see what she could remember. My grandfather Fintan was born in 1893. Mum thinks Fintan had five brother and five sisters. The only names she remembers are Dennis, William, Edward and Mary. Fintan married Bridget O'Shea whose family had a farm in Mountrath. They moved to Athy, Co.
Kildare where they had a pub and grocer shop. Bridget died in Athy, Kildare in 1926. They had two boys Joseph Anthony (my dad) born 24/7/1921 and John Roche born in 1923 both born in Athy Co Kildare. Fintan eventually worked in Bagenalstown Co Carlow where he met and married 2nd wife Minnie Sinnot.

Don't know whether this helps. It would be great if there was some connection.
Brian mum is thinking of getting a genealogy done of the Dowling family, would you have any recommendations as to the best way of doing this?

Funny you should live in St Albans. We grew up in Luton, my brother still lives there and the rest of us live in Australia now.

    Pat

Citation Text: Hi, My grandfather Fintan Dowling and his wife Bridget (nee O'shea) came from
Mountrath. Are you any relation too? - Pat Kelly, (daughter of Joseph Dowling)
    ---------------------

Mountrath. Are you any relation too? - Pat Kelly, (daughter of Joseph Dowling)
    ---------------------

Narrative

Grandson, Kevin Dowling says, "I have his War medals and I do have some photos of him and my grandmother (Minnie) in later life when they came to stay with us in France, and among my deceased father’s photos there are some pictures from Bagenalstown when he was the caretaker of the McGrath Hall. I think there is a picture of Jack getting married in there too. When I get time I will go through them and scan any I find and send them to you, if you find this helpful. I do recall his tales of time in the trenches, making tea from water scooped up from the trench - and I have his original trench spoon which is an ordinary dessert spoon hammered flat and then punched with holes to become an all round eating tool!"

The Royal Irish Regiment raised 3 Battalions for World War 1 and gained 47 battle honors during the course of the war.

During World War 1 the Regiment suffered over 3,200 killed in action and thousands more wounded in places such as Le-Pilly, Gullimont, Ginchy, Salonika, Mesopotamia and Palestine. The 6th was raised at Clonmel on 6th September 1914 as part of Kitchener's Second New Army and joined the 16th (Irish) Division 47th Brigade under Major-General W B Hickie. ---------------------

    Pat

The 1914–15 Star is a campaign medal of the British Empire which was awarded to officers and men of British and Imperial forces who served in any theatre of the First World War against the Central European Powers during 1914 and 1915. The medal was never awarded singly and recipients were also awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. The medal was initially not going to be awarded to soldiers who served in the Gallipoli Campaign. Those soldiers were to be awarded the Gallipoli Star instead.
