Narrative

NOTE: THERE IS A REPORT CONFUSION AND THIS INDIVIDUAL MAY BE IDENTICAL TO JOSEPH PATRICK DOWLING born18 Mar 1886.

Court Marshalled for Treason in 1918. Second cousin to wife Henrietta Hovenden.

Informant: P. S. J. Jones, 7 Reynolds Close, Collier's Wood, London SW19 2QJ. Tel 0181 715 1278. - 19 July 1997

"On April 16th, 1918, a U Boat was sighted in Dublin Bay and during the same night Robert and James Cotter, one of whom was de Valera's brother-in-law, were intercepted in a small sailing boat. It could not be proved that they were in communication with the submarine and they were convicted only of convening Admiralty Regulations. On the west coast "one of Casement's men", a Connaught Ranger named Dowling, landed from a German submarine and was arrested.

The Government were satisfied "that a design existed on the part of Germany, in combination with the Sinn Fein extremists and Irish revolutionaries in America, to land arms in Ireland and bring about another Irish Insurrection and thus divert British troops from the front in France." German aims were to follow up the anticipated success of their great offensive by further embarrassing the British in Ireland. British Intelligence agents, who had earlier warned the authorities to expect Dowling, now reported that on April 26th, at Cuxhaven, rifles and machine-guns had been transferred from closed railway cars to large submarines. "These consignments did not arrive in Ireland," Ministers were informed." - Page 87f of Ireland's Civil War by Calton Younger, Fontana Press 1968. (ISBN 0-00-686098-2).

IMPORTANT NOTE:

There is a possible conflict here for the indexes in the above books point to the above individual but, in another book a different name for a very similar incident is given:
P. 286:
The [Major Ivor] Price Report concerned a Corporal Robert J Dowling, of the 2nd Connaught Rangers, who had been captured on 12 April [1918] as he landed in Crabb Island off the coast of Clare. He confessed that he had been one of Casement's three lieutenants; and that he had been sent from Germany in a U-boat with instructions to get in touch with Sinn Fein leaders, find out the State of affairs, and return to Germany by way of Norway. A German "expedition" would set out three weeks after his return. The Sinn Fein leaders did not know of his coming and had not requested it; he had merely been told to seek them out. He was now in the Tower.

Aside from this sad adventure - which, incidentally, had been circulated to an unperturbed War Cabinet four days after Dowling's capture - Major Price had nothing to offer except some vague but "reliable reports" of expected arms landings in Mayo and Galway; information given by a defecting Irish Volunteer, a "respectable Limerick farmer," who said he had received imported German arms; and a story about the Cotter brothers ("one being a brother-in-law of Eamon de Valera") who had been found in a sailing boat at 3:50am near Kingstown Pier. A German submarine had been seen near the Kish Lightship the previous evening; and calculations of wind and tide made it possible that the Cotters had arranged a rendezvous.

John Doolin settled in Butler Co., Kentucky around 1800 and is said to have been born in Georgia around 1778. I cannot find any information on Doolins in Georgia or anywhere else before 1800. Any help would be appreciated! I have lots of information to share on the Doolin line in Butler Co., Kentucky from 1800 to the present.

Butler Co., KY is located in Western KY (about) 50 Northwest of Bowling Green, KY. I would guess that this is about 150 miles from Pulaski Co. In the Butler Co. 1810 Census there were three Doolin's listed: Daniel, John and William. My line comes from John Doolin. John married Cathy Rowe (about 1805) and remained in Butler Co. until his death in 1846. I do not know what happened to Daniel and William or how they were related to John. Any additional information is appreciated!

I bought the book entitled, Bill Doolin outlaw O.T. several years ago and found that there are many incorrect statements in the book. It clearly States that the father of Michael was Barton. The father of Michael was John and Ceaty Rowe Doolin. I have the will of John in which he names his children.

Michael's wife Mary was not of the Ruebettom & Cooksey families she was Mary Elizabeth Stephens. She did not die in 1850. She left Michael and after she had been gone a year he sued her for divorce. It became final in July 1855. I have these court records.Michael & Mary were married in Butler County Ky. in 1829. They came to Madison Co. Mo. to claim the farm that Mary had inherited from her parents, Jackey (John)
Bowman and Elizabeth (Taylor) Stephens. This line goes back to Peter Stephens who started Harper's Ferry in 1733, then sold it to Harper. I have been collecting records on these two families for several years and all are documented

Brian,
I have a feeling that John Doolin(husband to Ceaty Rowe) might be related to a Maurice Doolin, who was ordered to come to America in 1740 because of a crime commited in Ireland.
I haven't looked at the book but info is in the Journal of the House Of Commons of the Kingdom of Ireland,Volume 7 (1796) pg.56
I have a feeling that abuse and criminal acts was a vicious cycle in this certain family.
PLEASE do not mention this in any forum for my cousin will be very angry, for she does not easily share info. with others when it comes to
Genealogy, because she puts so much time and money into it. BUT she has copies of court Documents stating that Michael Doolin (son of John Doolin) beat and abused his wife.
It is of her Opinion and mine that Mary E. Stephens (wife of Michael) did not leave Michael;but rather was a victim of foul play.If she had left Michael she would have over time contacted her sister or children.she was never seen nor heard of again.

But this is only my opinion.

Keep in touch and let me know of your findings. DALLAS

P.S .I'm related through Michael and Mary's daughter Malinda B. Doolin b.1834 in Madison county,Missouri .she married Daniel Ham( 3rd
marriage), Their daughter Ellendor(Ellie) Francis Ham married Austin Allen Casey. I have a Generation sheet listing all of Michael's Children ;Malinda Doolin's children and the children of her brother Barton Doolin if your interested. -Ends

Brian,
I agree, those were hard times.Along with my family tree I love to research the background history of those and their surroundings.though I must say I haven't had the time to do so lately.Eventually I will get a copy of those documents from my cousin concerning the abuse.I then will pass it to you.
As far as the connection to John and Maurice it's simply a hunch of mine that the two are connected in some way. He is listed in the Immigration index list 1538-1940
He came to America 1740. source code 4971 source name:McDonnell,Frances. Emigrants from Ireland to America 1735-1743 a
transcription of the report of the Irish House of Commons into forced Emigration to America.Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co. 1992 134 pgs.
Source Annotation: Date transportation ordered and intended destination. Includes crime and County Where order was enacted. Extracted from Journal of the House of Commons of the Kingdom of Ireland,vol.7 1796 source pg.56
I haven't done further research on this info yet , but further research on this Maurice Doolin is needed. I was hoping you could help me in my quest to find more info on Maurice(he seems to be a mystery) and in doing so we might just find a family connection to John Doolin. I haven't tried as of yet ,but I will see if the Little Rock Genealogical Library (which is very large ) might have a copy of the Journal.
till then keep in touch, - Dallas

They lived briefly in Butler County in the early 1850s (a child was born there), then returned to Warren County.
