I am searching for information on my gggrandparents immegrated from Ireland to Ontario circa 1865. My ggrandfathew Mathew, b.1870 in Ontario married my ggrandmother Victoria nee Delona in Wallaceburg November 13, 1898 with a James Dowling (brother?) as a witness. Victoria's mother Sophia was from Ontario possibly Wallaceburg and married to Francis Delona of Chesterfield Twp, Macomb County Michigan.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

However, the sources of the birth of Elizabeth Dowling ( 1815 ) is her grave marker. It is located at Port Burwell, Ontario in a cemetery which was originally called the Port Burwell Baptist Cemetery and referred to recently as Estherville Cemetery. I still have not got the spouse situation of Thomas Dowling straight to my complete satisfaction. Right now I have him having had two; the first Kate Hodge and the second, Electa Brown. I have not found any reference to a Grace Hughs other than what I got from Sue Hines, but the name Grace appears to have been the given name of one of his daughters by Kate Hodge. The only relation I have no reason to question is Electa Brown. Regarding Hollwood vs Hollywood; Go completely with Hollywood as the former appears to have been a typographical error. The name is spelt HOLLYWOOD on George A. Hollywood's grave marker at the Port Burwell Baptist Cemetery. It is also spelt that was on Oscar Hollywood's and Sarah Hollywood's markers at the same cemetery. By the way, I know who Oscar Hollywood was but I do not have a Sarah Hollywood (b. April, 1768. d. Feb. 18, 1855). This could have been a married name. I also have an A.J. Hollywood (b.Jan. 1823 d. Nov. 4, 1898), Samuel Hollywood (b. Sept. 1799, d. Dec. 19, 1807) son of Amos and Mary, and James Hollywood (b. 1848, d. 1871). All of these are buried at Port Burwell Baptist Cemetery. Does this help or just confuse things further? Just figured something out. Your reply for 10. Re Thomas: is the posting by Sue Hines. I have seen that posting and it might be where I got Grace Hughs from. Leo Darmitz

Looking for info on ancestors/descendants of Elizabeth (Eliza) Dowling, born Ontario 1851. Father William born Ireland, died prior to 1871. Mother Mary Pollard Dowling, born Ireland 1819. 1871 Census for Mitchell, North Perth County, Ontario shows the following info:
William Dowling no longer present.
Mary Dowling age 52, born Ireland
John Dowling age 32, born Ireland
Elizabeth Dowling age 19, born Ontario
William Dowling age 17, born Ontario
Thomas Dowling age 2, born Ontario
Religious affiliation: Church of England
Believe the family came from near Dublin.
The next entry on the census sheet shows the James and Sarah Pollard family (probably an older brother of Mary), the parents were born in Ireland, and two sons born in Ontario.
Eliza Dowling married my GGrandfather Franklin Benjamin Bates on New Years Day 1872 in Brussels, Ontario. They settled in S. Michigan, where Franklin was from. Frank died in 1900 and Eliza remarried someone known as Grandpa Knight 3 or 4 years later. She eventually died in 1929 and is buried in Ida, Michigan along with Frank Bates. I have a couple of pictures of Eliza taken circa 1912. Would be very greatful for any information on this branch of my family. Thank you. Les Bates

Thank you. Les Bates

Hi

Sorry for delay getting back to you.

While I know of Agnes I have no real detail. My record of her comes from a public posting 10 years ago:

Dowling 1880's England.
Posted by John Parrish on November 29, 1998 at 00:48:59:
My father first married in November 1933 to Agnes Dowling (b1910) at Romford in Essex.
Agnes died several years later.
Agnes' father was James Dowling, a collier, with a birth year around 180-1890.
Any links with your data would be appreciated.
John Parrish

The e-mail that was attached to it failed so I deleted it. This snippet is unsourced.

The marriage between John and Agnes doesn't come up in Free BMD in 1933.
We don't have access yet to the 1911 UK census.

Interestingly this marriage is shown: Leslie G S Parrish dec qtr 1933 Romford vol 4a pg 1291 to Agnes Dowling. How sure are you its John Parrish? Ilford is real close to Romford. (Birth: Leslie Graham S Parrish June qtr 1909 Fulham vol 1a pg 188.

Interesting too is that you say Torquay in Wales. To my knowledge, unless there is a small village I can't find, Torquay is in Devon, England (on what some call the English Riviera). However, coincidentaly there is an Agnes born in Pontypridd, Wales (June qtr 1910 vol 11a pg 667). Pontypridd is a mining area and John above said James Dowling was a collier! The 1901 census has a big Dowling family with a James there but we need some more details before we can make the connection. A collier probabaly wouldn't figure in miltary records as coal was crucial to the war effort.

Depending on how wealthy you are, you can make a gamble and order the marriage certificate and see whats on that or wait for the 1911 census.

Regards,
Brian Dowling, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England www.dowlingfamily.info

Dear Brain
Christmas day went off good, no hick ups hope your day was a good one.
Just found out about an hour ago that my Mother in-law doesn't have a death certificate all she has is a card with Agnes name and death notes where she was buried.
thank you for the photo's I printed them off and showed mum she remembered the church and that her parents where nurses. she also said she remembers staying in a coal mining village so maybe that's where the name Torquay comes from. Mum said she don't remember grandfather James
Agnes was Welsh and I will get you to get a birth certificate off Agnes (PONTYPRIDD) as the year is 1910 , I do think mum has her years mix up she said Agnes was born 1913 also if it is no trouble I will get you to get a death certificate on Agnes also. Leslie died about 10 year ago here in Australia he had Ann to Agnes and two son's John and Peter to Peggy ?? so the person looking into Leslie and Agnes who names themself as CanberraScientific could be John or Peter Parrish mums half brothers, I will look into that. thank you again for all your help, hope any off the info helps with your family tree will talk to you soon and please let me know how much I need to pay you
Regards Kathy.

I read with interest your message on the Dowlings. I am from Darlington,SC. My ggrandfather was Frances Asbury Dowling, but I cannot remember any names further back than his. However, I do know that my branch of the family came directly (or so I've been told) from England on a land grant from the king. I believe that the Robert Dowling you mentioned was a relative of Frances Asbury, perhaps a brother or an uncle. There is a Confederate War Memorial to a Robert Dowling in our old family Cemetery plot.I will try to obtain more information about this from other family members. In the meantime, please keep me posted if you learn anything else that may be significant. I would be very interested in reprints of the book, and also of details about the Dowling reunion in Ireland that some of the "cousins" have been talking about.

Both Robert and son John Dowling were memorialized with headstones placed in the Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church cemetery in Darlington, SC. If I remember correctly, I read a newspaper clipping from the 60's when those headstones were placed by the DAR.
My notes have Robert Dowling enlisting as a private by May of 1777 with Captain William Vause's company of the 12th Virginia Regiment. Later, he served with the 6th Regiment of North Carolina Continental Infantry with Captain White's unit. Supposedly, he fought at Musgrove's Mill, Guilford Courthouse, Cowpens, and King's Mountain.
John Dowling enlisted on November 4, 1775 with Pinckney's 1st South Carolina Regiment at the age of 16. His company was commanded by Levacher de Saint Marie. In 1782, John is known to have been a guerilla with "Swamp Fox" Francis Marion. John and brother James served in Benton's Regiment which fought under Francis Marion.

I am working on this family line for my son-in-law. Here is some of what I have. There may be errors here just use this as more clues for researching.
Nancy Boutwell was the daughter of Burtonhead Boutwell.(This is correct I believe) But Burtonhead had two wives and I'm sure yet where Nancy fit in. His 1st wife was Elizabeth Commander born 1739.Children: John, Samuel &Thomas. 2nd wife was Patience children: Joseph, Lionel Delaney, Joanna & Anne. I have 2 more daughters Nancy & Mary(not sure which mother)Patience married 2nd time to Michael Lamy. He sued Burtonhead's estate for support of the children. Burtonhead died 8/22/1766 in SC. Burtonhead was a Welshman living in Orangeburg District of SC. one of the children, Joseph Boutwell married Elizabeth Micheau June 22, 1785. Nancy Boutwell married John Dowling in 1783. Nancy born 1763 and died March 30, 1849 in Virginia. Burtonhead Boutwell's will was dated 1761. John Dowling, son of Robert Dowling & Sarah Guinn. John Dowling served in the Revolutionary War. Mary Boutwell sister of Nancy married James Dowling, son of Robert Dowling and Sarah Guinn. Hope this helps. I'm still working on all this. Still trying to verify with more than one source. Southern Dowling/Boutwell connection
Posted by Joan Nieto on August 15, 1999 at 14:19:16:
E-mail: nietofreel@aol.com
Hello, Dowlings:
I am hoping some one of you can give me some guidance regarding the connection between the Boutwells and the descendants of Frampton Dowling. I am descended from the WILLIAM BOUTWELL (b: 1750-1760, d: 1843 Pike Co., AL) who was married to JANE DOWLING. According to current Boutwell thinking, William was the brother of Mary and Nancy, who married James and John Dowling. But there seems to be a difference between the Dowling and the Boutwell records, and this is where I would like some help. Dowling records show that Mary and Nancy were daughters of Butonhead Boutwell, while current Boutwell records show Mary and Nancy were daughters of Lionel Delaney Boutwell, supposed son of Burtonhead.

This is my question: Do the Dowlings have any documents to support that Mary and Nancy were the daughters of Burtonhead Boutwell? Do any Dowling records show the existence of an individual named Lionel Delaney Boutwell (or Lioney, or Loney of a time period that could make him the father of Mary and Nancy? Do the Dowling records show William Boutwell mentioned above who married Jane Downg?

Help will be greatly appreciated. - Joan

Southern Dowling/Boutwell connection

- Joan
