Narrative
Eddie Dowling (December 11, 1889[1]- February 18, 1976) was an actor, screenwriter, playwright, producer, songwriter and composer.
He was christened Joseph Nelson Gaucher on December 15, 1889 at l'Eglise du Précieux Sang (Precious Blood church), as least, one of five children, and reputedly more, born to an Irish and French-Canadian couple in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. He took his professional surname from the maiden name of his mother, Bridget Mary Dowling, who was born in Smithfield, Rhode Island. His father was Charles Gaucher who was born in St. Marcel, Province of Québec, Canada.[2]
He appeared on stage for many years.[3]His most famous role was as "Tom Wingfield" in the original Broadway production of The Glass Menagerie, opposite Laurette Taylor and Julie Haydon. He produced the play's original Chicago production in 1944, and followed it to Broadway.[3]
He was married to the Glasgow-born Actor and stage performer, Rachel "Ray" Dooley, who specialized in physical comedy; they had two children, Jack (adopted form Ray's previous marriage) and Maxine.
Eddie Dowling died in Smithfield, Rhode Island, aged 86.

Citation Text: Dear Brian
Thank you for your reply.
I have recently been researching Rhode Island Gouchers, having come across a recent obituary for someone who I couldn’t trace in any of my existing trees. Joseph Nelson Goucher, aka Eddie Dowling, came up in these researches.
There is a wealth of material online about Eddie’s life and work, but some of the information is contradictory. The Wikipedia has a number of inaccuracies and questionable facts.
“….he was the 14th of 17 children..” He was actually the third of five known children of his parents. His mother may have had other pregnancies, that didn’t result in live births; but not, I think, 17 pregnancies, and certainly not another 12 before Eddie’s birth. Don’t know where these figures came from.
“Some sources give his middle name as "Narcisse".” His grandfather’s name was ‘Narcisse’. All the material I have gathered says he middle name was ‘Nelson’.
“Dowling was married to ….. Rachel Rice Dooley.” There is some doubt as to her name. The online New York marriage index shows ‘Joseph N Goucher’ marrying ‘Ray D Graham’ and/or ‘Ray Dooley’. The census records show her first name as ‘Rachel’ so that seems correct, but her son has the second name ‘Graham’. Presumably the confusion over Rachel’s surname could be resolved by obtaining a copy of the marriage certificate.
John Graham Goucher was born three years before Eddie and Rachel married. I wonder if Rachel (or Rae has she appears to have been known) was previously married. Perhaps her maiden name was ‘Dooley’, and she was married to someone called ‘Graham’, or vice versa. Was John Eddie’s son or a product of a previous marriage? Presumably this could only be resolved by finding his birth certificate.
Eddie and Rachel’s daughter Maxine was born about 21 years after their son John, when Rachel was 42 – menopausal baby?
“Jack Dowling died serving in the World War II.” No! He did serve in WW2, and was a reporter, held by the Russian for a while, after the war, as the US Congressional Record shows. But he was a member of Time-Life organization staff when he was killed in a plane crash in 1955 in Paraguay.
Although John Graham Goucher, aka Jack Dowling, had a son, I haven’t followed this up, as they are no longer part of my ONS.
Eddie was so well known, that when his mother Bridget Dowling Goucher died in 1933, floral tributes were received from Governor Lehman of New York and President and Mrs Roosevelt.
I am attaching my Family Sheets for Eddie and his parents so you can see the information I have and my sources. If you can’t ready the files, or want copies of any of the material I have collected, please let me know.
Best wishes
Roger Goacher

Phil Cohen email address,
Citation Detail: Record for Webpage 20 Oct 2019 titled: The Dooleys ******** Tydeman & Dooley,
Citation Text: TYDEMAN & DOOLEY were a pair of comedic acrobats who starred on the B.F. Keith vaudeville circuit in the 1900s and 1910s. Vincent A. Tydeman grew up in Camden, New Jersey, USA, and also had a long career as a minor league baseball player. After retiring from baseball and the stage he remained a Camden resident until his passing in 1975. The Tydeman family lived in North and East Camden though at least the late 1970s, and were on Howell Street for many years.
The Dooleys were a family act, and at least one of the Dooley brothers lived in Camden for many years. The family name was originally Dool. As of this writing, I'm not sure which of the three Dooley brothers was Vincent Tydeman's partner, but I suspect it was either Johnny Dooley or Billy Dooley, Billy was the oldest, and is the more likely of the two. The third brother, Gordon Dooley, would have been too young. It may well have been that Tydeman's partner was the Dooley father, Robert Rogers Dool, which would explain the clown makeup in the photographs attached to the father Robvert Dool - Dooley.
Journalist Dan McConnell, who had grown up in the same neighborhood and had worked as a publicist for the Keith circuit in the 1910s wrote about the Dooleys in the late 1930s, as did Gordon Mackay, while working for the Courier. North Camden barber Pat Iarossi, who had a shop for many years at North Third Street told the following to Mackay in early 1938:
"I used to cut Ann Pennington’s hair when she was a child," Pat recalled. "And the Dooleys always made my shop their headquarters. Billy Dooley worked for me. The kids, six [ FIVE to be correct- PMC ] of them, trained in a patch we called the 'cow lot’. Rae and Mae were the two girls, while Johnny was the big shot of the boys.”
“They used to turn cartwheels right out in the lot there and come into my shop to do a little vocal rehearsing. Ann Pennington was always dancing, you couldn't keep her feet still. I remember one day Ann, Johnny Dooley and a girl named Moore went over to Lubin's in Philadelphia, trying to break into the movies.
“Lubin wouldn’t handle them and they all came crying into my shop.”
In March of 2007 an e-mail came to this website from John Vaughan, grandson of Mae Dooley and great-nephew of the Ray Dooley and the Dooley brothers. John wrote at length about the his family's show-business legacy.
"The Dooley's came to America in the late 1800's from Glasgow, Scotland and settled in Philly. The boys were named Johnny, Billy, and Gordon. The girls were named Ray and Mae. Their father, (my great grandfather) was named Robert Rogers Dooley, he was a famous Irish circus clown, and he married Mary Dool [actually Mary Docherty], from Glasgow, who was nicked named Mumsie.
The five kids all had an act, all did comedy, and the girl Mae, also sang. The went out on the road and toured a lot. Once, when they were all older, they played in Portsmouth, Virginia. Mae fell in love with a man she met there. They decided to get married, Mae dropped out of show business, the two of them moved back to Philly, and they had a baby boy in May of 1917. They named the child William Jonathan Dooley Vaughan. That child would grow up and become my father. That is my connection to the Dooley family.
The boys continued as a group and were headliners in their day. Doing mainly slap stick comedy. They stared in many comedy plays plus The Ziegfield Follies, George White Scandals and The Earl Carroll Vanities. We are talking early 1900's till after WWI into the early 1920's.
The girl, Ray (also spelled Rae sometimes), split off on her own and became a very big star, also on Broadway as an Actor and a comedienne. She performed in many musicals and also in the Follies and Vaudeville.
Her greatest fame came when she did a "kid act" together with W.C. Fields in The Ziegfield Follies in 1920 & 1921. It was based on this act that W.C. Fields got his reputation as a "kid hater". The Actor, Fanny Brice, who also worked with Ray and W.C., later stole the act for herself and called it Baby Snooks. Among other stars of the day, Ray Dooley later went on and performed together with Bob Hope (then called by his real name, Lester Hope) in the smash hit Broadway musical "The Sidewalks Of New York" in 1928.
Ray married a man named Eddie Dowling in 1931 (I think that was the year). He was famous in the business...a song and dance man, actor. director, producer, song writer (among other hits, he wrote "On The Side Walks Of New York"), and Pulitzer Prize Winner. He also introduced Tennessee Williams to Broadway in The Glass Menagerie.
My father's mother, Mae Dooley Vaughan died in 1947 in Philly. My father, who died in 1993, never knew how old his parents were for some strange reason! Ray died in 1984 in East Hampton, New York, she was 88 [Newspapers say 93- PMC]. The three boys all married show girls and all died young. Johnny died in 1928, he was 41, Billy (William) died in 1921, he was 39, and Gordon died in 1930, he was 31. Gordon Dooley was the only one of the five kids who was born in America, in the year 1899. The others were all born in Glasgow."
Their father, Robert Rogers Dooley, also died young, of apoplexy just after son Gordon Dooley's marriage in 1922. That same year, Johnny Dooley was featured in the movie When Knighthood Was in Flower. Starring Marion Davies, it was the leading movie at the box-office of the 1922-1923 movie season. At at the time it was produced it was the most expensive movie ever made with cost an estimated at $1.8 million. The film was the pet project of the famous media magnate William Randolph Hearst.
Interestingly enough, the Dooley family is still involved in show business. John Vaughan, who has been living in Berlin, Germany for many years, is a singer, songwriter, and composer. You can find out more about John at his website www.john-vaughan.com.

The front of the stone says Dowling and Goucher. On the front of the stone is just the name Eddie Dowling and the year 1976. then it says, his wife, Rae Dooley 1984. On the back of the stone is Lawrence A. Maytum 1901 - 1972, his wife, Marion Goucher 1899 - 1990. Also Emma M. Goucher 1889 - 1979, wife of Charles E. Then it says Charles E. Goucher, 1857 - 1926. Bridget, his wife, 1858 - 1933. (I'm guessing Emma was wife # 2 ) Also listed is Charles E. Goucher 1882 - 1970 William F. Goucher 1884 - 1960. they are all buried in St Joseph's Cemetery in Berkeley, Cumberland, RI, on Mendon Rd. Eddie Dowling was born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, December 9th, 1894 and died February 18, 1976, at the age of 81.
And, a coincidence, there was a photo of Eddie Dowling in last Sunday's local newspaper with this caption: "Ruth Hussey (right) of stage and Eddie Dowling, R.I.-born theatrical producer, participate in the dedicatory program of The Providence Journal's FM station, WPJB-FM, in 1948."
The road named for him is called "The Eddie Dowling Highway", or Rt. 146 in North Smithfield, RI. found these tidbits on the internet, after searching on "Eddie Dowling": he was an amateur juggler.... ....the original Iceman in 1946, directed by Eddie Dowling, with James Barton as Hickey and Dudley Digges as Harry Hope, ...
working in The Alamo, a Harlem nightclub, with Eddie Jackson and Lou Clayton, forming the team of Clayton, Jackson and Durante. Even after the decline of vaudeville, Coots continued to perform in nightclubs. I'll write more, as I find more info.... and I'll look up Eddie's parents' names next trip to the RI Archives - maybe I can get a few generations of names, of both "Dowling" and "Dooley" - and, with any luck, perhaps I'll find a link to my own "DOOLING" ancestors!!! - Beth Hurd Johnston, RI USA email address

Best wishes

Narrative
Wikipedia - 14 October 2019 - Rachel Rice Dooley WITH AMENDMENTS
Rachel Rice "Ray" Dooley (October 30,1888 to 28 January 1984) was a vaudeville performer.[1] Dooley was her stage name.
Biography
Dooley is believed to have been born Rachel Rice Dool, to Robert Dool and Mary Docherty on October 30, 1888 in Glasgow, Scotland. Robert Dool (stage name Robert Rogers Dooley), was an Irish-born circus clown.[1][2] Her brothers, Gordon, Johnny, and Willie Dooley, were also performers. She made her performing debut in a minstrel show in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She played "babies and brats" in the Ziegfeld Follies after World War I with W. C. Fields, Will Rogers, and Fannie Brice, among others. From there she moved to musical stage performances.[1]
Marriage
After a marriage to Elmer Graham in 1912 from which she had one son, John "Jack" Graham [3] , she later married with Eddie Dowling in 1919; the couple had one more child, a daughter, Mary Maxine (later Mrs. Clark). From 1919-34, Dooley teamed with Dowling for Ziegfeld Follies and in Thumbs Up in 1934, after which she retired. She came out of retirement in 1948 to appear in Hope's the Thing and Home Life of a Buffalo.[1]
Death
Ray Dooley died on January 28, 1984 at her home in East Hampton, New York.[1]

Best wishes

Narrative
84th Congress Record 1955: DEATH OF JOHN GRAHAM DOWLING
Mr Mansfield, Mr President, I was saddened to read in this morning's newspaper of the passing in a plane crash in Paraguay of an old friend of mine, John Graham Dowling, chief correspondent for the Time-Life bureau in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Jack Dowling used to be chief of Time's staff in south east Asia, with headquarters in Singapore. I met him many times in Saigon, South Vietnam, and I was indebted to him many times for the sound counsel and good advice which he gave me. He was an outstanding reporter, a good friend, and a fine American. His death will be a great loss to American journalism. May his soul rest in peace.
I ask unanimous consent to have printed in the RECORD as a part of my remarks a brief summary of John Dowling's life, which was published today in the New York Times. There being no objection, the resume was ordered to be printed in the RECORD as follows:
Began Career as Reporter
John Graham Dowling was born in Philadelphia on March 5, 1914.
He left Notre Dame University after 2 years to enter newspaper work as a reporter on the Chicago Times and Newark Star-Ledger. He became a charter member of the staff of the Chicago Sun, started by Marshall Field in 1941.
Mr Dowling covered the Pacific theatres for the Sun as a war correspondent in World War II. He saw combat in the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Okinawa. He remained on duty in the Far East until 1948. During this time he spent 1 year in Peiping and was held for 5 weeks by Russians during a visit to Manchuria.
Mr Dowling joined the Time Life staff in October 1950, setting up a south-east Asia bureau at Singapore. He covered the Korean war and the fighting between the French and Communist forces in Indochina.
Since March 1954, Mr Dowling was head of the Time Life bureau in Buenos Aires.
Mr Dowling is survived by his wife, the former Patricia Louise Shafer, and a son, Gordon Graham Dowling, 2 years old.

Best wishes

Citation Detail: E-mails regarding EDDIE DOWLING,
Citation Text: Dear Brian

Best wishes

Obituary
J. GORDON DOOLEY
J. Gordon Dooley, 31, comedian for the vaudeville team of Dooley and Morton, died January 24 at his home In Philadelphia of tuberculosis.
Dooley, going from vaude to legit, had appeared in a number of Broadway shows, including "Vanities," Ziegfeld's "Follies," "Honeymoon Lane", and "Hitchy Koo." He had entered vaude as a member of the Dooley' brothers act, working with William, who died September 29, 1921, when he was doing a double with another brother, Johnny, musical comedy comic, who died of appendicitis June 7, 1928.
Gordon Dooley married Martha Morton In July, 1922, when she was playing vaude with her parents, Sam and Kitty Morton. Martha replaced her sister Clara when she left the act to do a single.
Later Dooley and his wife formed a double act which was working up to time Gordon collapsed. Several months ago both Dooley and Miss Morton were about to appear in a talker short for Columbia pictures.
The day before camera work in Camden, N. J., Gordon became so ill that he had to go to his home in Philadelphia. He was never able to return to New York. Ray Dooley (Mrs. Eddie Dowling) was appearing in "Follow Thru" and when her brother's condition became critical she left the show to be at his bedside. There is also another sister, Mrs. George Vaughan (non-pro). The funeral services were held in the Dooley home in Bywood, a suburb of Philadelphia, with interment in Philadelphia. Appears twice in 1910 census.

On the bicycle is Johnny Dooley. This photograph was shot on the set of When Knighthood Was in Flower in 1922. My best guess as to the actor dressed in black is that it is Downing Clarke, then 53, who played the role of Lord Chamberlain in the film- PMC.
