Doris Dowling
Daily Telegraph - Last Updated: 10:27PM BST 21 Jun 2004
Doris Dowling, who died on Friday aged 81, was the Hollywood siren acclaimed for her performance as Ray Milland's saloon-bar pick-up in Billy Wilder's film The Lost Weekend (1945); seven years later she became the seventh of the bandleader Artie Shaw's eight wives.
Doris Dowling was born on May 15 1923 in Detroit, Michigan; her younger sister was the Hollywood leading lady Constance Dowling. "Unlike Connie I was not a classic beauty in the movie sense," Doris explained. "So I developed this kind of sophisticated attractiveness instead."
She began her career in theatre, in plays such as Mr Skeffington and Men in White, and entered films on a Paramount studio contract in the mid-1940s, joining stars such as Marlene Dietrich and Fred MacMurray at the Melrose Avenue lot.
Her sympathetic yet unsentimental portrayal of prostitution in The Lost Weekend prompted the New York Times critic to say she was "entitled to Academy recognition". In the event, unlike Wilder and Milland, she did not win an Oscar, but she was soon cast in The Blue Dahlia (1946) - scripted by Raymond Chandler - as Alan Ladd's adulterous wife who is found murdered by a mystery killer.
Feeling that Paramount gave her "too few roles beyond playing a savage bitch killed off in the first scene", Doris Dowling left for Italy in 1948 to appear in several films, including the neo-realistic Bitter Rice (1948) and Orson Welles's Othello (1952), in which she played Bianca. She was joined in Rome by her sister Constance, who also appeared in a number of pictures there while becoming involved with the writer Cesare Pavese; he committed suicide after she ended the relationship.
Doris Dowling returned to America in the mid-1950s and announced her retirement, only to make a comeback as Smitty in the forgettable picture Running Target (1956).
During the 1970s she became a frequent guest star on television, appearing in Wonder Woman, The Dukes of Hazzard, Kojak and The Incredible Hulk. She also performed in the revival of Clare Boothe Luce's play The Women on Broadway in 1973, toured in Follies in 1974, and returned to Hollywood for a cameo in Murder She Wrote (1984).
She went out with a number of actors before, in 1952, marrying Artie Shaw, whose six previous wives had included Ava Gardner and Kathleen Winsor. "I would be the last to decry my own skill at botch-making," said Shaw, "but I picked myself some damn good partners when it came to gumming up the works."
Their marriage was dissolved in 1956. She is survived by her third husband, Leonard Kaufman, whom she married in 1960, and a son.
