E-mail from John Dowlan jodo@atlantic.net
29 January 1999

Dear Sir,

My name is John Russell DOWLAN, age 72. I am an amateur genealogist just beginning to research my family tree. To the best of my knowledge my Father, Harry Delaney DOWLAN, always believed he was born in Pennsylvania but no records or verification have ever been found. His birth was alleged to be in 1876 and he died in 1948. His parents died when he was a baby and he was raised in an orphanage. He never had a birth certificate, knew his parents names or had any proof of his age or where he came from. I never knew the name of the orphanage or if it still exits, so I have been unable to find or trace his roots.
I had often wondered if our name was a derivation of DOLAN or DOWLING, as my Father often felt it may have been changed by the orphanage. There seem to be many close sounding variations to DOWLAN that one can get confused as to which came was first. Without be able to get back his Parents background it will probably be a long process to gather specific details of his life.
Thank you for listening,
John DOWLAN.

George William Hollwood should be Hollywood as it is on his headstone at his gravesite in Vienna, Ontario. Also acording to that headstone, he was born in 1811 and died Aug. 6, 1902. However, the sources of the birth of Elizabeth Dowling ( 1815 ) is her grave marker. It is located at Port Burwell, Ontario in a cemetery which was originally called the Port Burwell Baptist Cemetery and referred to recently as Estherville Cemetery. I still have not got the spouse situation of Thomas Dowling straight to my complete satisfaction. Right now I have him having had two; the first Kate Hodge and the second, Electa Brown. I have not found any reference to a Grace Hughs other than what I got from Sue Hines, but the name Grace appears to have been the given name of one of his daughters by Kate Hodge. The only relation I have no reason to question is Electa Brown. Regarding Hollwood vs Hollywood; Go completely with Hollywood as the former appears to have been a typographical error. The name is spelt HOLLYWOOD on George A. Hollywood's grave marker at the Port Burwell Baptist Cemetery. It is also spelt that was on Oscar Hollywood's and Sarah Hollywood's markers at the same cemetery. By the way, I know who Oscar Hollywood was but I do not have a Sarah Hollywood (b. April, 1768. d. Feb. 18, 1855). This could have been a married name. I also have an A.J. Hollywood (b.Jan. 1823 d. Nov. 4, 1898), Samuel Hollywood (b. Sept. 1799, d. Dec. 19, 1807) son of Amos and Mary, and James Hollywood (b. 1848, d. 1871). All of these are buried at Port Burwell Baptist Cemetery. Does this help or just confuse things further? Just figured something out. Your reply for 10. Re Thomas: is the posting by Sue Hines. I have seen that posting and it might be where I got Grace Hughs from. Leo Darmitz

Hi Brian,
I am not exactly new to genealogy, but I'm sure I still have a lot to learn.
The name I am looking for is Ellen Dowling. She was a school teacher in
Ireland who came to Canada cir. 1858. And then to the US. I understand she
was married on board ship to Charles Boyle. I don't know much more about
them. This was told to me by a relative. I am in the process of going to FHC
to research census and ship arrivals. If you have any information on anyone
who may be this person, I would greatly appreciate it. I realize this is a
long shot. But, you never know.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your help. I knew it was a long shot. Our cousin had info from
her great aunt concerning Charles and Ellen. It is mostly about Charles, but
this is what Great Aunt wrote:
Ellen and Charles were married on board the ship by the captain on their
way to Canada. Ellen was a school teacher in Ireland. Charles was indentured
to a man as apprentice carpenter(?) He came to United States later. Raised
family, Mary, Aunt Kate, Aunt Ellen, Uncle Jim (and maybe Aunt Belle). Charles
also had four brothers who left Ireland for the US.
Charles as a bachelor, volunteered to bury the yellow fever victims at New
Orleans. He was paid in gold, which he took back to Ireland and dropped it
into his mother's lap as she shelled peas so she knew he was back. He last
saw her running toward the ship with her red hair hanging down her back
begging him to stay in Ireland. Aunt Belle used to meet immigrants from
Ireland and helped them write home to Ireland.
It is touching story, and I wish I knew more. If I find any more info, I
will let you know. Feel free to use whatever you would like. Thanks again
for your help.
