I really enjoyed looking at your web pages and I have bookmarked them. I love the coat of arms. Am I entitled to use it myself?
I come from a family of Dowlings that originate from Southern Ireland. I was born in London and now live in Brighton. I have a brother, Chris, who also lives here. Most of the remaining relatives all still live in or around Ballybar, Carlow.

Your site has also confirmed a link between two names for me! When I was a boy growing up in Putney, I used to go to a Roman Catholic school in Wandsworth. As it was the only catholic school for miles, every Irish family sent their kids there. (Until I was eight I thought every child in the world had one set of English grand parents, and one Irish set). When I was six I had a teacher who kept calling me "Doolan". She explained later that she came from the same town as my late father, and that he would "explain things" to me. When I asked my father he said "pay no attention to the daft woman!", and I never did get the explaination.

Later that year I went to Ireland for 3 weeks (every kid at my school went "home" to Ireland for the school holidays. I was staying at my grandparents farm in Carlow and as I was seven years old and it was my fifth visit, I was allowed to venture out on my own in the daytime. While out playing one day, a middle aged farmer with a dog said hello to me. When I said hello back, he noticed my English accent. "You must be one of the "Doolans" he said.
"No my names "Dowling" I replied. Sadly I don't recall how the conversation ended. Later that evening, I told my uncle Neddy about the farmer. He explained that the farmer had confused me with one of the "Doolans" up the road as they also had english children staying with them. I though no more of it.

On the last two days of my holiday, I actually met the "Doolan" children and played with them. Like kids did then, we exchanged addresses. It was then that I noticed they spelt their name "Dowling" but pronounced it "Doolan". Before I returned home my grandmother actually "corrected" all the names to read "Doolan".

A few years later, at my Fathers funeral, I met a distant relative and recalled the story of the "Doolans" with him. The relative told me that I was actually related to the Doolans but because of a long existing fued over inheritance rights both sides actually refused to acknowledge each others existance. The relative, also told me that he had been known as Doolan until he was Twenty, and since then had taken the name of Dowling. He only found out his real name was Dowling when he tried to emigrate!

He also explained the children spelling their name Dowling and then my grandmother changing it back to Doolan. The childrens father was called Dowling and their mothers maiden name was Doolan. When their father died everybody reverted to calling the widow by her maiden name. To cap this all, three years ago I was talking to a catholic priest who came from the Carlow area. "Which of the three Dowling families do you come from" he said. He then enlightened me that there are the "Dowling's", the "Doolan's", and the "Dowling's that are pronounced Doolan".

I think that I will just have to accept there is a blurred link between the two names!

Anyway, thanks for a great site. I think I have been bitten by the bug and will do some family tree building myself.

    Best Wishes

Pete Dowling; P.S. I'm rebuilding my web site. I will include a link to your site as I usually have a selection of "Dowling" sites on it.
