It is also thought that he worked as a station agent on the railway in Northern Ireland before he came to Canada. Does any of this ring a bell with any of your family history I have been unable to find out anything about his marriage. I believe he was married in Ireland. Thanks for any information you can give me. - Chris
2: Hi Brian: Thanks for your reply. The information I have is very sketchy as the only uncle Brian has left does not remember very much of his grandfather. The information i have is that the Brian who left Ireland was born in County Cork and worked in Northern ireland for a railway company before coming to Canada. Floyd says that he was Station Agent at an important junction between belfast ans Londonderry. Floyd also says during the war he visited some relatives near Enniskillen at a farm called Florencecourt but thinks these relatives were on his grandmother's side. Unfortunately he doesn't know her name. Brian's grandfather Thomas was the first of this Dowling family born in
Canada and he was born June 18, 1872. The children Thomas had were named, John Arthur, Frederick Lawrence, Floyd Douglas and Gladyne Mary May. I think they were Protestant which would be unusual for Southern Ireland wouldn't it? Hope you can make some sense of this I wish i had more time to spend on this as I want to visit Ireland someday and see where both our roots are. - Chris
3: Hi Brian: Thanks for getting back to me. Brian's Father was Frederick Lawrence. Thomas was married to an Ella May Turner. He was the first od this Dowling family to be born in Canada. I don't know Brian's wife's name but her maiden name may have been Coulter. Does any of this make sense? - Chris

His father was Lawrence Dowling who was a prisoner of war in Hong Kong during the Second World War. He had 2 brothers named Arthur and Floyd and a sister named Gladine. Floyd is the only surviving sibling. I am interested in family histories and wonder if you know anything about my part of the Dowling family? I am currently living in the vicinity of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Sincerely, Peggy Dowling

Dear Brian
I am searching for information about Maria(Mary) Anastasia Dowling who was born in Fermoy, Cork Ireland in 1848.
She was the daughter of John Dowling (Surgeon) and Elisabeth Mosey.
Elisabeth and her children arrived in Australia in 1854, John Dowling had died by this time.
Mary married George Deverell Robinson in 1859 in Australia. George was also originally from Cork, his parents being John Robinson and Jane Deverell.
These people were my Great Grandparents.

--------------REPLY----------------
Dear Victoria

Thank you for your information.

I have now put your Dowlings on my "Interests Database" as they were not there when I searched.

All your Dowling ancestors left before Irish Civil registration which started in 1864 (although there were some Church of Ireland marriages recorded after 1845).

The Griffith's Valuation for Fermoy, Cork (1848-1864) only shows
Jeremiah (x 2 entries) in Artillery Quay and Queens Square
and
John (x 2) in King Street and Market Street in the Fermoy Townsland

Who these people are, in relation to you, I do not know but there are so few in Fermoy they could be related. It is possible that this is your John but difficult to check.

I found no Mosey's, Deverells or Robinsons in Fermoy. There are a good few Robinsons in Cork.

I would recommend seeing if you can look at a microfilm of the Fermoy Parish records which may show John prior to 1864 and the children.

-

Dowlings went on the area after your John as the civil lists show births, marriages and deaths. It looks like the Jeremiahabove mighthave died aged 71 in 1880. This could make him a brother of your John. Perhaps he was an older brother or younger brother who inherited the property on John's death. That might of encouraged Elisabeth to leave for Australia.

It would be interesting to find out how John died, most Surgeons learned their trade in the army.

-

I am sorry I cannot be of more help but I have recorded the details and will get back to you if someone links to your family.

Dear Brian,
What an interesting email! I am looking for a Dolan(Doolan) relative and wondered if you could spot any connection.
I did look at your site but your family tree only gave a direct line of descent so I could not see my gt grandmother there!

If I put down all the information I have on her, perhaps you could tell me if there may be a connection and possibly tell me where I
could look next. (I have had no luck with my Dolan research at all up to this point.)

First of all, I was interested in where your family all seem to come from - Mountrath, Co Leix which is very close to Wilmount Co Meath
(see below).

From my grandparents marriage records it seems that my gt grandfather lived in an illegible place which I thought may be Montrath (Co
Westmeath?) or Mountrath or even Maperath (Co Meath).

My maternal gt grandmother's name was given as DOOLAN on one baptismal form in 1875 and as DOLAN on another in 1877.
From the RC Parish records of Carnaross, Co Meath, it seems that this ELLEN DOLAN had married a BRYAN MANNING and was now living in the townland of Wilmount, Co Meath. The records show the baptisms of their 6 children - 5 girls and eventually a boy named Laurence. The eldest daughter was born in 1852 and was called ELLEN MANNING. She married a man who was brought up in a nearby townland of Maperath, Co Meath. They were married in 1875 in Kingstown, Co Dublin at St Michael's Church. (Sounds a bit like your tree!).
There were a couple of other DOLAN's on the parish records but I did not see that they fitted in with ELLEN DOLAN's life.

So there you have it! I would very much like to hear from you if you have any connections - or ideas or suggestions as to where I could
look next. Good luck with your search, Myra Duffy.
