Hello Brian,

You may recall that I contacted you a couple of months ago regarding my Great-grandfather, William Edmund Dowling.
Well so far I haven't made any headway tracing the marriage certificate.

However, the reason for writing to you again, is that this evening I had a call out of the blue from a man called Mr Ralli, who lives quite close to me in Sandwich.

He has been contacted by a firm of probate solicitors in Belfast, who are trying to trace descendants or relations of Terence M Dowling, who is the son of Winifred Alice Dowling.

Mr Ralli is the son of Winifred's sister, and he can recall visiting relatives in Ramsgate when he was young, which he assumes was his aunt Winifred. He found my number in the 'phone book and thought that I might be related, but unfortunately for him I am not. I felt that as you used to live in Ramsgate, I thought the there may be some connection with your family.

If you wish, you can contact the solicitors at

Inwood, Garrett & Stone Ltd, 56, Bradbury Place, Belfast, N. Ireland BT7 1RU (028) 9024 1412

If you would like to speak to Mr Ralli for more details, his number is 01304 611355

I know that these people are not related to me, and they may not feature in your family history, but I am sure that you will have more information to offer than I have. Who knows, there may even be an inheritance involved!

Hope to speak to you soon, regards, Adrian
... Additional note:
I spoke to Mr Ralli (of greek descent Greek), Winnifred's surname was Williams and married a Dowling. Her sister was Esme Williams who marrried a Ralli. He believed that Terrance is probably dead but emigrated to 8 Southgate Road, Wellington, New Zealand. - Brian Dowling

My gggrandfather, Martin Dowling was born in Hollywood, Co Wicklow. He signed up, in Dublin, for the East India Company in 1854. His wife was probably the daughter of an English journalist and was called Catherine Amelia Gray. In about 1870 my great grandmother was born. She was Catherine Amelia Dowling. While she was still a child both parents died of cholera in Lucknow and she was brought up in an orphanage and later possibly adopted by a sea captain called Rule or Ruell. She married Cornelius Aloysius Riordan at Visagapatam in about 1886/87 and had six children.

I am new to this. My Uncle has done some research and traced the family back to Ireland but I want to know who they were in Ireland.

I have just this week made contact wioth Riordan cousins, sons of her son George who ran away to join the army at the outset of the first
world war and whom she never saw again. George was gassed and never returned to India but settled in the Ringwood area. He hasd three children and died when they were quite small. The one I contacted knew very little of the story but had always wondered why they had received a parcel every month from India after his father died Catherine Amelia Dowling was a very strong personality. She trained as
a nurse and in her later years worked in Calcutta.

She died in 1936

I hope this tale of a Dowling is of interest. I wonder if the Martin Dowlen on the India Mutiny medal list is her father.

My uncle has at last agreed to the rest of us accessing his records so I may know more soon.

My great grandmother was born Catherine Amelia Dowling on 16.1.1867 at Dinapore, near Patna, India.

Her father was Martin Dowling and her mother Amelia Gray.

Martin Dowling came from Hollywood, Co Wicklow and had enlisted with the East India Company in 1854. His father was James Dowling. I have been told that the Dowlings came from the Townland of Johnstown. I could find no Dowling graves in the graveyards of Hollywood, but in the pub were extracts from 'The History of Hollywood' that shows Dowlings involved in the 1798 rebellion - John and William

I have his enlistment record, and indeed the enlistment records of one or two other Martin Dowlings who proved to be red herrings.

Are they of interest to you?

I would like to know if you have records of any Dowlings at Hollywood either before or after 1850

Thank you for the reply and the suggestions. I know I have other relatives who have done some research, I am attempting to contact them to see if they have more information than I do.

This is what I know now:

I found Idaho census records from 1880 listiing Andrew Dowling (mining) born in New Brunswick, Canada 1832.

He married Francis Ella McCallen, born in Maine.

His brothers were listed as well, John Dowling born approx. 1834 New Brunswick, Patrick Dowling, born approx. 1840 in New Brunswick.

Family oral history records that Andrew and Francis were of Irish descent.

Andrew Dowlings decendants are numerous here in Idaho. I will keep looking, and when I have the technology, I would love to add it to your Dowlings of the world page, I have some great old photos.

Thank you again! Patricia Barnes.
