A new message has been added to Dowling re: Dowling Roots, especially County Limerick.

My paternal Grandparents, John Dowling & Mary (nee Collopy) immigrated to the USA (probably Port of New York) sometime around 1870-1876 + or -. They came from County Limerick on a "sailing ship". Unfortunately, the both died before I was born. My Great-grandfather was also named John Dowling, and my Great-grandmother was a Nash. In the USA they lived in Painesville, Ohio, and Cleveland, Ohio. Both died in Cleveland. They had 3 Chiuldren; Brigit Thomas (my Father) Jane & John. Anyone know of any connections, or any information. mise le meas, John William Dowling

Dia Duit, a Bhrian: thanks for your message responding to mine (to begin).

I regret that I seem to have caused some confusion, but I believe I can clear it up. Please see the attachment to this message.

Your web site is wonderful, and I will be returning to it frequently. I am still very much a novice with the computer, and I may not move as fast as some can. But I am catching on.

The names of my Great-grandparents I know basically from my Grandfather's Death Certificate. What I know of my Grandparents is mainly what I got from my late Father. My Grandparents both died before I was born as you will see on the attachment.

I have cousins in County Limerick, with whom I have had some communication.

I have always assumed that John and Mary were married in Ireland before they came to the USA, but this is one of those things I cannot be absolutely certain of, but all indications seem to be that they were.

My Father was born in Painesville, Ohio, USA, and lived his childhood and very early adulthood in Cleveland, Ohio. My Mother was of a family several generations in the USA.

As noted on the attachment, I will list my own Progeny later, but for the present time I am sending what is essentially germane to our present purpose. What I am trying to say is "one step at a time" to avoid overloading.

One of my Granddaughters is living in England.

My only visits to Ireland were to North Ireland, including Belfast and Armagh. This was during World War II, and I could not go to the Republic because it was a neutral country. This was disappointing, but I did get to see Emain Macha. Perhaps I will still get to go to Eirinn someday.

I have 2 e-mail addresses; sefeinjd@bellsouth.net & seanathair@bellsouth.net
both go to the same mail box, so either can be used.

Please let me know if you need any more information and/or clarificxation. Also, I will greatly appreciate any information you can give me. Slan agat, John

The National Congress, supported by a large portion of the Navy (among other groups), was at loggerheads with President Balmaceda. The ramifications of these events were felt in Magallanes. In January 1891, when two newly acquired warships (bought in Europe) arrived in the port, their commanders defied the authority of the Governor, Valdivieso. Fearing a repetition of the havoc caused in the 1877 mutiny, Valdivieso deftly took control of the vessels and diverted them to Buenos Aires. To strengthen his position, 60 soldiers were sent to Punta Arenas by the central government. He also created a civil defence brigade, with arms supplied by the government (see reference below to requisitioning). Fortunately for the Magallanes colony, the civil war there never came to blows.----------------------------------------------------------

Seeking information about the family of John James Dowling, born ? Ireland, 1802: died in 1876 (possibly in Canada): married Anne Kerwin on Aug.1, 1835 in Tullow (Tullowland?). Had 5 children: Catherine, James Thomas, Mary Jane, William John, and Martin (my great grandfather). The family emigrated to Canada at some point, and my grandmother lived in Western New York State. -- I will be traveling to Ireland in the summer and hope to research this further. Any tips will be appreciated.
