I have been busy getting my scraps of paper in order and entering my notes into my new genealogy program (Generations). I guess one never gets it all organized, but I have started to work on my husband's line again (O'Shea and Dowling). To refresh your memory -- my mother-in-law, Anastasia Dowling (O'Shea) was born in Balleen Lower, Freshford, on February 22, 1900. Her father was Richard Dowling and mother was Anne Kelly.I believe her father was Richard Dowling Born February 7, 1872 -- father James Dowling and mother Catherine Holland -- although I am not sure of this.I recently found that Anastasia's family attended St. Bridget's Church in Lisdowney, Co. Kilkenny -- which is near Balleen Lower.I also know that her brother, Joseph Dowling, died January 17, 1888 and her sister Anne Dowling Campion died on December 22, 1965 -- I have the memorial cards for both of them. With this collection of miscellaneous facts, what is my next step? Is there some way to check the records of St. Bridget's Church?I notice that you are collecting vital records -- do you want a copy of Anastasia's birth certificate? Thanks for your help. Rita O'Shea

Just ran across your website. Nice!! Interesting to know that DOWLING may have been a derivative. Now I know why Maria's (below) sister CATHERINE was listed as DOWLING on the 1881 Wales Census, and as the sis-in-law of my grandmother. I always thought it was a misprint. Catherine married TIM HENNESEY in 1882 in Victoria, Wales. Both emigrated to America as far as I know.

My grandmother was MARIA ELIZABETH DOOLAN, b. 1858, Waterford, Ireland. Don't know if it was city or county of. Mother's name was MARY PHELAN, father's name was JAMES or DENIS DOOLAN. Family story has Maria being raised by an Uncle WILLIAM PHELAN in Kilmacow, Co. Kilkenny because one or both of her parents died at a young age. Can't verify tho.

Got this info from wedding certificate and 1881 Monmouthshire, Wales Census.

MARIA married MICHAEL PATRICK O'LEARY, 1880, Victoria, Wales (Ebbw Vale) They had one dtr. ELIZABETH born in Victoria, Wales in 1881 before they emigrated to America in 1881(Mike) & 1882 (Maria & Elizabeth)

Possible connection with our DOOLAN/PHELAN Clans?? Thanks. Don

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the info, but I already have it. There is a disparity on the age of my grandmother Maria Doolan as she was born on Nov. 1, 1858 according to the family bible, and it's in her handwriting. Catherine's age and being born
in Wales is what puzzles me. I don't know when Maria emigrated to Wales, but it would have to be before 1861 if Catherine was born in 1861, and the history I have is that Maria's father James Doolan was already deceased and
she was raised by an uncle in Kilmacow, Co. Kilkenny. The name Denis Doolan was listed as the father of the bride on my grandparent's wedding certificate in 1880 so I'm wondering if a brother took over the marital duties at some
point and begat Catherine. Gets confusing at times doesn't it? I still have to send an inquiry to the Waterford Heritage Center for info on that side of my clan.

There is no more 4 Shop Row, or any of the other five addresses that my ancestors lived at. We were in that area in 1998 and a friend from Wales, Brendan O'Leary escorted us to all of them. The old Bedwellty Iron Works
Museum was especially interesting to us, seeing the old photos of how they lived at that time. It makes one appreciate his ancestors more and what they had to go through to make a better life for the following generations. God bless'em!! My Sullivan gggrandparents and a great aunt are buried in the Ebbw Vale Cemetery in the non-conformist section. Unfortunately when we were there they had already initiated pulling up all of the 100 year old or more grave markers in that section of the cemetery and stacking them off to the side, to
be taken over with vines and weeds. Very sad indeed for researchers.

Thanks for writing Brian, and stay in touch. Don.

Thanks. Don.

Don.

My father looked up in the Library in Waycross, Ga and found that four Dowling brothers came from Ireland many years ago and settled, three in Hoboken, Georgia, and one in White Oak, Florida.

My father, LeRoy Dowling, middle son of five brothers, is all that remains of his father's children. He lives in Hoboken, Georgia, enjoying age 82, happily.

My one brother was killed in a car/train wreck in Jacksonville, Florida in 1965, born in 1950. I myself reside in Jacksonville, Florida and have since my 1950 birth with no spouse or children. I have several cousins in Georgia,
Texas. Dowlings all, of course. Aother cousin lives in Yulee, Florida. Our Dowling branch enjoys moving about though I have predominantly stayed in one spot. I have another first cousin who, once she fniished High School here in Jacksonville, marred and settled to one place, as well, marrying A.T. Collins, Jr.
You mentioned Dowlings in several places but not here in Jacksonville. My grandfather Dowling worked for the railroad and came through this area a great deal. Evin Dowling was his name and he married Effie Mae McLean (some spell it McClaine). My father knows more and we could pass that along to you if you would be interested.

There is another strain of Dowling or two here in Jacksonville but if they are related to my line it would be so far back we are unaware of the connection. But there are a few of us here.

All the best in Life and Love, my very distant kinsman, and hope you continue to enjoy the pursuit of knowledge in our lineage. Sincerely, Martha (Marti) Agness Dowling, BA, RT(R)(ARRT).
