I believe that Micheal Dowling's father's name was James Dowling, because I found a newspaper article, Naugatuck News, Colchester Section, dated November 10, 1900, which States:
Thomas and Michael Dowling of Naugatuck are in town to attend the funeral of their father. The funeral of James Dowling took place this morning at St. Andrews Church.

Citation Text: My father was Harold E Dowling born in CT in 1898. His brothers & sisters were Frank, Leo, James, Helen and Irene. Irene died around 1912 at age 15 or 16. My grandfather was Michael Dowling-wife Margaret(maybe)Bray. Michael was born in the NY, Margaret was born in Ireland. Michael's father was Philip Dowling born in Ireland and came over to the US during the potato famine around 1950. Philip had 3 other children born in Ireland. Anyone with more ino please respond.

My father was Harold Edward Dowling, birth 8/1898, Naugatuck, CT., died 1974, Lexington KY, buried in New Orleans, Louisiana 1974.
His father was Michael Dowling, born 8/1870, I believe born in Naugatuck, CT, My father's mother was Margaret Bray Dowling, born 3/1873, Portland CT,
My father's siblings were Frank Dowling, born 4/1891; Irene Dowling, born 7/1894; James Dowling, b. 5/1896; Leo Dowling, born 2/1903; Helen Dowling, born ?/1901
I believe that Micheal Dowling's father's name was James Dowling, because I found a newspaper article, Naugatuck News, Colchester Section, dated November 10, 1900, which States:
Thomas and Michael Dowling of Naugatuck are in town to attend the funeral of their father. The funeral of James Dowling took place this morning at St. Andrews Church.

Citation Text: My father was Harold E Dowling born in CT in 1898. His brothers & sisters were Frank, Leo, James, Helen and Irene. Irene died around 1912 at age 15 or 16. My grandfather was Michael Dowling-wife Margaret(maybe)Bray. Michael was born in the NY, Margaret was born in Ireland. Michael's father was Philip Dowling born in Ireland and came over to the US during the potato famine around 1950. Philip had 3 other children born in Ireland. Anyone with more ino please respond.

Citation Text: The Great Famine (Irish: an Gorta Mór (anˠ ˈɡɔɾˠt̪ˠə ˈmˠoːɾˠ)), or the Great Hunger, was a period of mass starvation and disease in Ireland from 1845 to 1849.(1) With the most severely affected areas in the west and south of Ireland, where the Irish language was dominant, the period was contemporaneously known in Irish as An Drochshaol,(2) loosely translated as the "hard times" (or literally, "The Bad Life"). The worst year of the period was 1847, known as "Black '47".(3)(4) During the famine, about one million people died and a million more emigrated from Ireland,(5) causing the island's population to fall by between 20% and 25%.(6)

The event is sometimes referred to as the Irish Potato Famine, mostly outside Ireland.(7)(8) The proximate cause of the famine was a natural event, a potato blight,(9) which infected potato crops throughout Europe during the 1840s, also causing some 100,000 deaths outside Ireland; the food crisis influenced much of the unrest in the widespread European Revolutions of 1848.(10) Longer-term causes included the system of absentee landlordism(11)(12) and single-crop dependence,(13)(14) and the impact of the blight was exacerbated by government laissez-faire capitalism economic policy, common in the world at that time(15)(16) though in the case of Ireland in the mid-19th century, this was tempered by some interventionist policies also.(17)

William Dowling (born 1848, Co. Kerry) married Mary Lyons (born 1850) in Naseby, New Zealand, in 1874. They lived and owned land in Hyde, NZ then in 1886 left the area. It is thought they may have travelled to Australia.
William left a brother, John, in NZ and it is thought another brother, Edward, who also married in NZ, had earlier shifted to Aust.
