Thomas Dowling, Calif. gold rush

E-mail: devlin@genevaonline.com

My great great grandfather was Thomas Dowling was a Calif. gold rush miner who settled in Moore's Flat, Ca. He married Mary Dooling, a mail order bride. Mary was from County Wicklow, Ireland and Thomas was from County Kerry, Ireland. I know Mary was born in Ireland, I'm pretty sure Thomas was also. Any more info or help would be greatly appreciated! Sorry, don't have any hard dates.

Brian, I was starting to get back into the research "thing" here and found the reply to my query. To answer your question about Thomas Dowling. I have no dates at all. I am guessing he was born before1864 because I am pretty sure he was related by marriage to Bishop Patrick Manogue, who was a priest in Moore's Flat, during the gold rush. I have dates of approx. 1862 - 1881 for Fr. Manogue's time as a priest there. I think Thomas married Patrick's niece. I have Thomas's wife listed as Mary Dooling, with both being born in Ireland, Thomas in County Kerry and Mary in County Wicklow. All my info is from a family history my grandmother wrote before she died. I have found many errors in it as I try to connect her stories with hard facts (like dates!) and have hit a brick wall with the Dowlings, Doolings, and Manogues. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for your time, feel free to email me back, who knows when I will get back to the message board!

I was wondering if you had any relating to Dowling's in Binfield Berks. I found a Pat Conroy who seemed to be on the case of these but found her E-mail to be unobtainable. This is what I have discovered at present, I have found that my grandfather Sydney William Dowling [dob 7/2/1897], his father William Clifford Dowling [dob 16/8/1863] and his father William Dowling [dob circa 1841 - I can not trace his birth registration which I understand was not compulsory until around 1860, but aged 40 at 1881 Census (Binfield)] were all born in Binfield. Lazarus and Darling Wesley's father was also named Darling.
The best bet is to find someone with a copy of "A Dowling Family of the South"
Otherwise, you can travel to Macclenny, Baker Co. Fla and see a copy in the Historical Society's archives. I don't have the address, but look up Baker County on line. It'll be there.

Dear Maria,

I have been going back through the old letters and really reading and paying attention to these various Dooleys. Your letter (see below) poses a question. If this is indeed the Thomas Dooley who is reported in the History of Wilkes County to be the son of Robert Dowling and Ann Beasley Coffee, then it appears that he was not born here in America. Look at the description from The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography in your first paragraph below. It says: Country: Irish. This would seem to mean that he was from Ireland wouldn't you say?
Just something else for us to think about. Would love to know what everyone thinks about this.

Can anyone identify this Thos. Doolen who was born in 1727?

The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, June 1895, Index: Volume II, includes a list of Virginia Troops in French and Indian Wars. The "Return of the 2D Company of Rangers, Com'd by Capt. John Ashby, Oct. 21, 1757" includes the enlistment on Aug. 18, 1755 of "Thos. Doolen, 5' 8", age 28, Country: Irish, Trade: Shoemaker".

No county is listed. Is this the same Thomas Dula who married Elizabeth Beazley in Essex Co., Va. around 1754-55? Is this the Thos. Dooling, son of Robert Dooling (d. ca. 1734 Essex Co., Va.) and Ann (Powell) Coffee Dooling who d. ca. Oct. 1844 St. Anne's Parish, Essex Co., Va.?

I was wondering if it was the same "Thomas Dowling" who first appears in Orange Co., VA, on 28 May 1752 when he appeared before the Orange Co. Court and made oath that he was "immediately imported into this Colony from Ireland and this is his first opportunity to make oath to the same in order to entitle him to 50 acres of land in this Colony which right he assigns over to Honorias Powell . . . Thomas Dowling was almost certainly born c1720 in Essex Co., VA, to a certain Robert Dowling (or Dooling) and his wife Ann (Powell) Coffey."

If we can determine if he was, in fact, the same man, then we have a more accurate birth year for him through his enlistment in the Virginia
Troops.

Any thoughts?

Maria and Flora,
Could this be the brother of Colonel John Dooley of Revolutionary Fame in
Wilkes County Georgia?

"History of Lincoln County Georgia by Clinton Perryman Chapter III page 7. Leaders: There were two outstanding leaders Elijah Clarke and John Dooley. Another leader of promise was a brother of John Dooley, Captain Thomas Dooly. He was killed in a skirmish with the Indians near the Oconee River, on July 22, 1776 while returning from Virginia with a band of recruits for the Continental Brigade in Georgia. This was his only engagement but he fought with courage, determination and unconquerably spirit being murdered by the Indians while trying to defend himself.
Other pages of interest in this same book , concerning this, is 119,120, & 121.

According to my findings, Patrick Dooly (died 1768) was the father of Col. George Dooly, Elizabeth (Betsy) Dooly, Col John Dooley (b 1740 m 1769 d 1780) and Captain Thomas Dooly who was murdered 7/22/1776.

I did a lot of study in the beginning on this line, but with the help of Dorothy Ward proved that this was not my line.

I have accumulated lots of data on this line, especially on Colonel John Dooley. The University of Georgia Library has a lot of books on this subject, especially The Battle of Kettle Creek which was Col John Dooley's biggest.

Troops.

Catherine had at least three sons born before emigrating; Patrick, born 19
